Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Director of Physical Plant will be responsible for directing and overseeing all operational, management and planning aspects of the campus facility management, including buildings and grounds maintenance and repair, custodial services, and central heating plant operation. The Director will lead, manage and develop a team of approximately 65-70 Physical Plant employees and directly supervise 3-4 managers, an office manager as well as outsourced vendors and contractors. Will collaborate with campus colleagues to achieve departmental goals; development and oversight of budget; compliance with regulations; coordination of emergency planning and development and execution of strategic facilities plans. The incumbent will provide members of the Wheaton College community with a functional, safe and reliable physical environment that supports the academic mission, optimizes student learning and engagement, and advances the goals of the Campus Strategic Plan and Master Plan. Additionally, the Director of Physical Plant, in conjunction with Assistant Vice President of Business Services and Physical Plant, will develop, implement, and monitor, a standards-based facilities operations plan in alignment with industry best practices and broader institutional plans/policies, maximizing performance and service-delivery, seeking continuous improvement, and minimizing the accumulation of deferred maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Facility Management, or related field required.
5-10 years of experience in facility management, (minimum of three years at the supervisory level) required.
Certified Professional Maintenance Manager ( CPMM ) desired.

- Extensive knowledge of facility operations, preventative maintenance programs, utility systems, emergency preparedness, regulatory requirements, building codes, construction specifications and standards.
- Ability to read and understand construction plans and documents.
- Applied understanding of supervision, goal setting, performance appraisal, and problem solving.
- Must have strong computer skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work independently, and collaboratively with others to advance institutional goals.
- Exemplary written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with senior-level administrators, faculty, and staff individually and in groups.
- Experience working effectively with diverse teams required.
Certified Professional Maintenance Manager ( CPMM ) desired.
- Professional experience working on a residential college or university campus strongly preferred.
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems ( CMMS ) including SchoolDude preferred.
