Job Description Summary

The Governor’s Emergency Education Relief ( GEER ) Advisor is responsible for providing complete organizational information and services to students across a number of disciplines that may include admissions, financial aid, academic advising, career services, international students, and disability services. The GEER Advisor provides professional-level career counseling and/or academic advisement and provides direct student assistance in career development activities. The GEER Advisor is responsible for coordinating internal and external partnerships to enhance services; making referrals for resources to assist in the students’ career and educational success; and serving as the liaison between high schools, students, employers and the college.

The responsibilities of the GEER Advisor include, but are not limited to: facilitating student orientations; guiding students’ career decisions and class selection; tracking the advancement of students and providing case management and assistance for at-risk students; and assisting students with job searches, resume preparation, and placement or transfer.

The GEER Advisor will focus on noncredit to credit transitions and advising for students seeking information for enrollment in continuing education courses. Primary focus is on Culinary Arts, Technology, Health Care, Skilled Trades, Business and Professional Services, and Automotive. Coaches will offer students an opportunity to identify their strengths, actively practice new skills, and effectively navigate appropriate resources.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred in student personnel, education, psychology, human resources or related field.
  2. Minimum of two years full-time experience in the professional area.
  3. Experience in counseling, psychology or related field with an adult population
  4. Must have supervised personnel and administered program directly related to the professional area for a minimum of two years.



Criteria

CRITERIA : The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. Other information and observations made during the interview process may be considered in the selection process. Resume/CV and cover letter are required with the application.   1. Shares the knowledge of the college catalog, curricula, and programs.
  2. Provides career, job and transfer articulation information to a diverse population of students.
  3. Provides advising for prospective, new and current students in a variety of formats and locations including peak registration, individual advising sessions, classroom visits and group sessions.
  4. Assists international students in providing comprehensive advising services to F-1 and other non-immigrant students; namely admissions, placement testing/interpretation, academic program planning, international academic credential evaluation procedures, work authorization, reinstatement, change of visa/tuition status, I-20 extensions, travel authorization procedures, and F-I student transfer guidelines.
  5. Conducts SOAR sessions and FYE advisement sessions .
  6. Interprets Accuplacer, Michigan, SAT, ACT, and TOEFL test results and/or identifies the proper prerequisites and course sequences for the student.
  7. Remains current and knows how to use Colleague, Owl Link, the email system, and other technologies or software required to guide students through all aspects of advising.
  8. Communicates and updates students throughout the academic year including the benchmarks of 15, 30, 45 and 60 billable hours. Enforces the completion of the developmental sequence once the student begins the process.
  9. Completes Satisfactory Academic Progress ( SAP ) appeal process.
  10. Responds to and manages cases assigned through the Retention Alert System.
  11. Provides guidance to students individually or in group settings regarding career decisions, degree plans, and transfer opportunities.
  12. Identifies skill gaps and advises students on relevant workforce programs to meet their needs.
  13. Assists students with registration and appropriate course selection.
  14. Utilizes a wide range of software and computer systems to track and analyze student progression and retention.
  15. Analyzes student retention data and takes appropriate action to promote student success including case management of at-risk students.
  16. Helps students understand current job markets by researching career options  Facilitating student orientations.


Job Requirements

  1. Must be available to work Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work schedule subject to change based on the needs of the department.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  3. As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
