Primary Function

The primary responsibility of this position is to facilitate the smooth progress of undergraduate students in the Department of Special and Early Education through academic programs from admission to matriculation. This includes undergraduate programs leading to bachelors’ degrees in special education ( LBS, vision, special populations) and early childhood education.
Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

The qualified candidate provides developmental academic advising to prospective and current undergraduate candidates regarding teacher education programs. The Special and Early Education Department is a broad-based department with early childhood education and special education undergraduate licensure programs. The qualified candidate also participates in program development activities and is a valued member of program and curriculum committees for the department.
Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

Bachelor’s degree with 4 years of academic advising related experience in higher education or related experience to the hiring unit
OR Master’s degree with 3 years of professional experience in higher education, leadership, student personnel, academic advising

Education and Experience Preferred

• Possesses and applies advanced principles, concepts, practices, and methods
• Availability to work some evenings, weekends, and off-campus assignments based on critical advising cycles

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
1. Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing quality educational guidance. This includes student needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of student satisfaction.
2. Administration and Management — Knowledge of business and management principles involved in the presentation and delivery of academic programs, strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, recruitment methods, and coordination of people and resources.
3. Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff with varied levels of background knowledge and diverse perspectives.
4. Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
5. Knowledge of educational, evaluation, and measurement principles, practices, methods, and techniques, university policies and procedures.
6. Speaking — Talking to others to convey information effectively; ability to develop a rapport with students, staff, faculty, and community college personnel.
7. Written Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
8. Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
9. Lifelong Learning—willingness and ability to develop proficiency with a variety of university, college, and department level databases, policies and procedures, and programs.

Actual hiring rate is commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity; position includes a robust benefits package to eligible applicants.
