Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

In support of our mission of becoming a recognized national leader in honors education, promoting innovative, active, and engaged learning in a diverse, inclusive, and supportive community of students and faculty, the Honors College invites applications for the position of Senior Academic Advisor.

Position primary purpose and general responsibilities:
The Senior Academic Advisor is responsible for facilitating student success by maintaining, defining, and implementing proactive strategies that help students stay on track to fulfill their undergraduate educational goals. This position is responsible for the design and implementation of an advising curriculum and outreach to students, which will contribute to college and university initiatives related to student retention, engagement, and degree progression. This position does not have any direct reports. This position will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs.

The Director of Academic Advising is responsible for:
  • Lead Honors College Academic Advising services, including:
    • Design, coordinate, and execute advisor training
    • Developing, planning and implementing an advising strategy
    • Design and implement an assessment plan for academic advising
    • Leading advising team meetings
    • Overseeing advising caseloads
    • Mentoring advisors
    • Providing feedback on performance
    • Monitoring advisor professional development
    • Advise a caseload of students
    • Attend AAAC monthly meetings to ensure communication with campus wide advising initiatives, and ensuring compliance with university advising metrics of success
    • Design and implement an annual calendar of communication to ensure student progression and graduation
    • Coordinate and facilitate the use of advising technology including Banner, DegreeWorks, Navigate, RamConnect
    • Liaising with Honors College faculty on advising issues and student outreach
    • Manage Honors College retention and student engagement, including:
    • Lead retention efforts, including creating and implementing a comprehensive retention plan
    • Keep accurate records of student retention, graduation and progression and report as needed
    • Develop data-driven strategies to identify factors impacting student retention and progression
    • Honors College graduation process
    • Track Honors College progression
    • Manage DegreeWorks status and Honors College major completion
    • Manage course enrollment and course progression tracking

  • Lead Honors College First Year Orientation and supervising student pre-registration
  • Represent the Honors College on campus wide retention and advising committee
  • Serve on GMed Selection Committee
Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Master’s degree in any field
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience providing academic advising in a college or university setting
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
  • Proficiency (or ability to become proficient) in using online software and applications at an appropriate level and scope to support the position’s responsibilities
  • An understanding of the needs and motivations of and the ability to communicate effectively with high-achieving, goal-oriented students
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience using Banner, SSC Campus, and DegreeWorks
  • Familiarity with the application of data analytics to issues of student retention and progression
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
  • A record of exemplary personal and professional integrity
  • Sensitivity to the need for confidentiality regarding student concerns and issues and a commitment to the rules regarding confidentiality, subject to university reporting requirements
  • The necessary judgment to understand when additional professional help may be needed or appropriate to manage student problems, issues, or concerns
