Position Summary
The Baker prepares the bakeshop/ cafe production items including doughs, cakes, cookies, pastries and other dessert and baked items. This position ensures product orders are processed correctly and of highest quality before transportation. The baker maintains inventory for the bakeshop/cafe and ensures the equipment, cooking and storage areas are maintained in a clean and safe manner. The Baker also cooks in other work areas of the kitchen in addition to the bakeshop, as needed based on overall production needs. This is a full-time, 12-month position and shifts may include nights, weekends and holidays. This position leads the work of staff and student employees and reports to the Assistant Director of Dining, Culinary Operations.

This position adheres to the Service Standards set by Housing Food Services and sets the example for others by exhibiting appropriate professional behavior, creating a respectful and inclusive work environment.

Work Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Requires lifting up to 30 lbs on an infrequent basis and up to 20 lbs routinely
  • Walking and standing on wet and slippery floors several times daily - generally during floor cleaning time, but occasionally due to spillage or equipment malfunction
  • Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (in and out of walk-in refrigeration and freezer compartments)
  • Exposure to hot, humid conditions (commercial dish room)
  • Working directly over heated food service areas several hours per day while supplying food to and serving food on a hot serving line
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Interacting with a large number of people
  • Requires lifting, bending, twisting, stooping and exertion for long periods
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination to perform essential duties of the job

    Special Requirements:
  • Must have, or ability to obtain a Lane Country Food Handler's card within 2 weeks of employment
  • Must take and be able to understand Hazard Communication Training and Kitchen Safety Training supplied by employer

    Essential Personnel:
    This position is one of those required positions necessitating that the employee make every reasonable effort to arrive at campus at their regularly scheduled times unless otherwise notified by their supervisor. Essential personnel must provide reliable and current contact information at all times.

    Minimum Requirements
  • One year of experience as a Baker in an institution, restaurant, hotel or commercial bakery.

    Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrated culinary skill and an understanding of commercial kitchen operations.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of commercial kitchen production equipment.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of experience as a Baker in an institution, restaurant, hotel or commercial bakery.
  • Experience directing, delegating and assigning work to staff members.
  • Experience in barista work and cafe supervision
  • Experience decorating cakes and pastries.
  • Two-year degree from a Bakery/Pastry Arts program.
  • Experience working within a HACCP plan
  • Experience in catering operations.
