Department Summary
The HEDCO Institute is a research and outreach unit within the University of Oregon (UO) College of Education (COE), which aims to close the gap between educational research and practice. The HEDCO Institute's core mechanism for improving practice is through the conduct of authoritative rapid evidence reviews and research syntheses that meet the immediate decision-making demands of local, state, and national school leaders. The work of the HEDCO Institute is carried out by a team of faculty and staff who work collaboratively with affiliated faculty at the UO and an external advisory board comprised of research and policy partner institutions, school leadership organizations, professional societies, foundations, and business and industry partners. The HEDCO Institute also provides research and outreach training and experience to students from across the COE and the UO.

The UO COE is organized in four academic departments and 14 research and outreach units. All departments include both tenure and career non-tenure track faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs addressing the full range of issues present in educational and social systems. Our faculty are devoted to inspiring and mentoring the approximately 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students in the COE who will be the next generation of educational and social science leaders. A range of academic degrees and majors are offered, including communication disorders and sciences, elementary and secondary education, school psychology, counseling psychology, couples and family therapy, special education, education studies, administrators, and research methodologists. As noted in our mission statement, COE faculty, staff, and students are committed to developing and validating programs that prepare scholars and practitioners, while promoting respect for diversity, equitable opportunities, and inclusive environments. The COE is currently ranked 5th among all public institutions, and 14th among all public and private institutions nationally (U.S. News and World Report, 2019). College of Education graduate programs are some of the highest ranked in the country for both research scholarship and graduate education, including the Educational Leadership, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, and Special Education Programs. Faculty are dedicated to enhancing multicultural competencies, promoting social justice, and promoting education and prevention sciences and practices.

The HEDCO Institute is a central research and outreach unit in the COE that operates within the Dean's Office. Functions of the HEDCO Institute thus facilitate the success of the entire college as well as external alumni, donors, and community partners.

Position Summary
The Digital Communications and Marketing Specialist will lead the Institute's marketing and communication efforts, advancing the Institute's outreach objectives by managing, coordinating, organizing, and executing communication projects. This position will frequently collaborate with the COE Communication Office and the central University Communications Office to ensure alignment with the COE's and UO's overall communication strategy.

This position will be responsible for content writing, strategic planning, development, implementation and execution of communications plans, website content strategy and maintenance, social media content (with support), email marketing, information architecture development and testing, digital advertising project management, and analytics reporting. This position will also oversee the work of student assistants as necessary.

The Digital Communications and Marketing Specialist will work closely with the Institute's Executive Director, Partnerships Director, Science Writer, affiliated faculty, and student workers to support ongoing communications work. In addition, this position will actively monitor analytics and engagement trends across channels to make content recommendations that best engage our primary audiences.

The person in this position will need to be proactive, work independently, show consistently sound judgment, and have a demonstrated ability to manage, understand, and communicate complex issues and institutional affairs to multiple audiences and through a variety of media. This includes developing positive relationships with the Institute's administrative leadership and staff, faculty, students, and external stakeholders. The position may occasionally require working in the evening or on weekends.

Minimum Requirements
  • Three years of experience as a public relations representative for an organization which involved gathering information, writing and/or producing materials, presenting information to the public, handling public relations, preparing press releases, and interaction with the news media. At least one year of this experience must have involved participating in planning and administering an organization's public relations program.

    A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a closely-related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience but will not substitute for the one year of specialized experience.

    Professional Competencies
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with a demonstrated ability to write, edit, and create content for all mediums and various audiences.
  • Understanding of multimedia and digital communications best practices including development and understanding of content for websites.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage communications plans.
  • Detail oriented and high level of accuracy and efficiency while managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, set appropriate work priorities, and require minimal supervision over regular work activities.
  • Ability to manage stressful or difficult situations in a calm, constructive, and professional manner.
  • Ability to assist in developing and implementing communication protocols and quality standards.
  • Understanding of accessibility-related guidelines including Title II and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA.
  • Comfortable sizing images for various web properties and captioning digital multimedia content.
  • Ability to work with the Windows and Mac OS operating systems.
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and equity.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in email marketing systems such as MyEmma, Bronto, iModules, MailChimp.
  • Experience in a modern web environment, with intermediate-to-extensive experience working in content management systems (Drupal, Word Press).
  • Experience tracking and reviewing analytics across platforms (email, web, social) to develop actionable marketing recommendations.
  • Experience developing and managing online ad campaigns and search engine optimization.
  • Demonstrated high-functioning organizational skills while working as part of a larger team.
