The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington invites applications for an Assistant Research Scientist position in sexual and reproductive health measure development and research within the Department of Applied Health Science.  We are seeking an Assistant Research Scientist for a multi-year study aimed at developing and psychometrically assessing sexual and reproductive health measures for use in both English and Spanish social surveys.

 

Drs. Kristen Jozkowski (PI; public health), Brandon Crawford (PI; public health), Ronna Turner, and Wen-Juo Lo (U of A, Co-PIs; statistics and research methodology) are the leads for the project. The Assistant Research Scientist will work with the PIs as well as faculty in other disciplines at Indiana University and the University of Arkansas and other academic institutions. The Assistant Research Scientist will be based in the Applied Health Science Department at Indiana University. This project presents unique opportunities for gaining research experience and working on a national project with a dynamic interdisciplinary team.

 

The term of appointment is one year, with potential renewal for an additional year. The candidate may start as early as January 2022. The salary and benefits are competitive, and include funding for conference-related travel and expenses. The Assistant Research Scientist is expected to live in the Bloomington, Indiana area. This position is not remote.

 

Responsibilities: The Assistant Research Scientist will join a multi-disciplinary team aimed at developing measures for social surveys among English and Spanish speaking US adults. As part of this project, there will be multiple phases of data collection in English and Spanish using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The Assistant Research Scientist will serve in a leadership capacity and play an integral part in the dual language components of the project including development of multi-language surveys and overseeing language and cultural focused sub-projects. Additionally, the Assistant Research Scientist will be an independent researcher responsible for conducting analyses, collecting data in English and Spanish, leading and co-authoring manuscripts, preparing reports, submitting research to academic conferences, and helping to support graduate students and postdocs in the dissemination process. The Assistant Research Scientist will also pursue external funding via grants by soliciting and writing proposals and reports for federal, state, city government RFPs as well as private foundation and corporation RFPs, persuasively communicating the team’s mission to potential funders, and assembling and submitting external grant requests, including letters, proposals, budgets, and presentations. Pursuit of grant funding will be led by the Assistant Research Scientist with support from and in collaboration with the PIs.

 

Qualifications: Applicants are invited from any relevant discipline including public health, the social and behavioral sciences (e.g., sociology, psychology), Spanish, and/or Hispanic linguistics. Candidates must have received a doctoral degree from an accredited educational institution by start of appointment. Being fluent in English and Spanish is required. The successful applicant will have research experience in quantitative methodologies, data management, and excellent oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal and organizational skills. Demonstrated successful dissemination of scholarship is also required. The successful applicant should be able to provide evidence of past work or skillsets. Experience with qualitative data analysis and experience managing research projects as well as a track recording of funding is preferred.

Faculty pursue research in a wide array of areas including alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention, HIV/STD prevention, human sexuality, sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, obesity, maternal and child health, population health, public health policy, and application of health behavior theory.
