The Graduate and Post Doc Academic Affairs is seeking aCase Manager who will report to the Support and Outreach Case Manager for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows. This role triages, provides support, assistance, and direct follow-up for JHU Engineering graduate students in the Whiting School of Engineering who are in distress and/or are encountering personal/nonacademic barriers to effective performance in their academics and/or research.

This role uses interventions, referrals, and follow-up services to provide a high touch and personalized response to address individual student issues in areas such as physical or mental health, finances, interpersonal issues within the university, conduct, and work/life balance.

This role will collaborate with the Graduate Student Affairs team to provide wellness programming and initiatives and liaise with campus offices and services to share resources and referrals, including, but not limited to, the Office of International Services, Counseling Center, Health and Wellness Center, Campus Security, Title IX Coordinator/ Office of Institutional Equity, Disability Services, Office of Engineering Graduate and Postdoctoral Academic Affairs, Student Conduct, Registrar, etc. While strong, supportive relationships may develop with students, the Assistant Case Manager does not engage in individual therapeutic relationships or psychological counseling.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Case Management - 75%

  • Meet individually with students as needed to provide support and referrals to resources and services to help them achieve their academic goals and personal wellness.
  • Provide timely follow up with students to ensure they have ongoing support and are engaging with referrals and resources.
  • Collect, evaluate, and record all information pertaining to student cases that come in through online management and/or referrals. This may include entering notes and managing data on behalf of other staff.
  • Provide referrals to support services within the University and larger Baltimore community.
  • Research local community resources for needs that may arise outside of the university’s scope. This may include legal aid, tax preparation services, etc.
  • Follow up and track cases to ensure student compliance with recommendations and adequate support.

Programming - 20%

  • Plan and promote monthly educational programs on topics related to academic success, student wellbeing, soft skills, local resources etc.
  • Lead annual orientation programming logistics in partnership with Graduate Admissions, Office of International Services, the Graduate Representative Organization, and other partners.
  • Facilitate biweekly newsletter promoting resources mentioned above.
  • Update websites as needed to maintain student life-related content.

Other Responsibilities - 5%

  • Remain abreast of emerging trends in student wellness in higher education particularly in graduate/professional schools, STEM fields, and among international and underrepresented student populations.
  • Other projects as needed/duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Public Health or related field.
  • Three-years experience in managing response to crisis situations and navigating complex, decentralized environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two-three years’ experience directly interacting/supporting university students on a regular basis.
  • Experience working with diverse and international university populations.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to independently interpret and advise on university and divisional academic and business processes and policies as related to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Ability to prioritize and direct broad-spectrum staffing demands with multiple stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Ability to manage and track large amounts of sensitive and diverse data..
  • Ability to interact with staff and faculty of all levels within the division, keep projects moving forward and motivate team members to perform and stay on track.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly relay information among faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows and students.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguous and confidential situations.
  • Knowledge of student services/educational software applications (for example: Advocate, SIS, SAP, Slate, Salesforce).

Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
