The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University seeks an assistant professor of literacy and language education (English education emphasis), with specialization in English language arts education at the secondary school level. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position. Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate-level English language arts methods courses for the English education licensure program as well as graduate literacy and language courses
  • Recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students
  • Collaborating on learning, discovery, and engagement activities (including seeking external funding to support those activities) within the College of Education, across the university, and with secondary schools
  • Developing a strong area of research and scholarship that informs theory and practice in English education
  • Contributing to ongoing COE reform initiatives and program accreditation processes
  • Demonstrating a commitment to diversity and equity in education through scholarship, teaching, and/or engagement

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned doctorate in English Education or closely related field
  • Demonstrated scholarship in English education or closely related field
  • Experience teaching secondary English language arts (grades 6-12)

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:         

  • Experience teaching undergraduate/preservice courses in English language arts methods
  • Experience supervising preservice teachers
  • Experience teaching culturally and linguistically diverse learners
  • At least 3 years’ experience teaching secondary ELA in U.S. schools

THE LITERACY AND LANGUAGE (L & L) EDUCATION PROGRAM within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C & I) contributes to a culture of discovery, learning, and engagement in the College of Education. The program offers prospective researchers/scholars and K-12 educators the opportunity to investigate contemporary issues in literacy research and theory as well as pedagogical methods related to literacy and language teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum. Faculty members are committed to creating and disseminating knowledge relevant to the discipline of literacy and language education; preparing scholars, educators, and leaders in literacy and language education on the local, national, and international levels; and promoting social equity through access to literacy for all learners.

L & L PROGRAM FACULTY WITH AN ENGLISH EDUCATION EMPHASIS share responsibility for the preparation of undergraduate English majors with a concentration in English education. These undergraduate students are housed in the English Department in the College of Liberal Arts. Inter-departmental cooperation and communication regarding the teaching and coordination of courses in both departments is thus a vital part of the undergraduate program’s success.
