Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The System Administrator I provides assistance with maintaining the integrity of the Windows Server operating system environment. Provides support with file restorations, backups, disk space maintenance, and performance issues. Configures and maintains servers and server applications primarily designated to the local campus server infrastructure. Participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. Ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers, and partners.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Add/remove users from general usage security groups through approved processes
  2. Apply OS and server software patches and upgrades
  3. Configure/add/develop new server services as necessary
  4. Assist in maintaining the integrity of the campus server environment to include the operating system and server software
  5. Assist in the deployment of configurations and software to servers and workstations
  6. Administer and troubleshoot networked printers and campus print servers to allow continuing compatibility and functionality
  7. Create and maintain SOPs for supported services
  8. Ensure established IT methods are followed; works within job specific deadlines and schedules set by supervisor, escalate issues that are more complex
  9. Provide routine DNS and DHCP support for campuses
  10. Monitor and maintain continuity with system software licensing and maintenance agreements
  11. Monitor and deliver patching and security updates for campus workstations and servers
  12. Provide recommendations regarding hardware and system software planning
  13. Maintain tasks, projects and activities in the IT system of Record (S-NOW)
  14. Provide support and administration of system configuration tools such as SCCM, SCEP, and SCOM
  15. Repair and recover from hardware or software failures of campus servers, coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies
  16. Run risk assessment on campus servers and resolve reported vulnerabilities to mitigate the risk to the systems
  17. Provide assistance with VDI images and profile management systems
  18. Troubleshoot server or access problems as reported by users
  19. Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of learned routines, procedures, practices and skills that are more complex
  • Demonstrated analysis skills, knowledge of business process review functions, and knowledge of process design, and project management
  • Ability to work in cooperation with developers, analysts, managers, and consultants
  • Ability to deal with somewhat complex problems that must be broken down into manageable pieces
  • Understands relationships between problem components and prioritizes them
  • Utilizes knowledge, experience, and available resources to find solutions
  • Participate in formal or informal group problem solving for immediate issues and to collaborate with team and shares relevant information with those who may be affected by decisions
  • Ability to convey technical or complex information to others in non-technical terms
  • Ability to recognize immediate obstacles to completing work and initiate action to address a need without being directed
  • Knows and follows standard operating procedures and define departmental metrics


PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree and at least 1 year of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Entry level certification in areas of responsibility, e.g. MCP, Server+, VCP, Linux+, Security+ or current certification equivalent
  • Experience with Windows Servers or Server applications, r e administration, including storage array technology


Salary

Hiring salary range is $56,097 - $64,512

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
