Director of Equity and Inclusion




SUMMARY

The Director of Equity and Inclusion (DEI) will work directly with the Vice President of College Culture for Inclusion (VPCCI) on key strategic initiatives as defined in the Carthage College 2020-2023 Strategic Plan and the Anti-Racism Plan of Action. The DEI will ensure the development and implementation of proactive and integrative strategies and practices that lead to a more inclusive student and work culture. A person successful in this role will have a broad base of knowledge and experience pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion, will possess dynamic tools for continuous innovation and learning, and will support student affinity groups so that genuine inclusiveness is reflected in campus life, the programs carried out, and the relationships and partnerships in which we engage.

The DEI will serve as an institutional resource and requires experience in diversity and inclusion training, coaching, and an understanding of institutional and structural racism. The position also requires project management skills including research, planning, organizing, developing, and participating in and/or leading cross-functional teams. This role also requires collaboration and experience in problem-solving with a balance of empathy and pragmatism. The person in this role is a team player and leads by example to build trust and credibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Strategy Development and Support
  • Supervise the Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion.
  • Work in a cross-functional capacity with VPCCI and college departments to create and execute strategies to address and eliminate student equity gaps, as part of the college’s commitment to the Moon Shot for Equity.
  • Develop, lead and coordinate in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion the Intercultural Center activities for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Support and advance existing DEI programs, i.e. (Equity and Inclusion Certificate Program and Anti-racism Intercultural Seminar Experience (ARISE) program, Wiggan-Kenniebrew Experiential Learning, DEIL Fellows Program, etc.) Research and propose innovative new strategies to create a sense of belonging for students, staff, and faculty.
Affinity Group Support
  • Design and coordinate programming and initiatives to support college campus affinity groups, i.e. Black Student Union, Mi Gente, My Brother’s Keeper, Muslim Student Association, etc.)
  • Provide guidance and support to new proposed student, faculty, or staff affinity groups.
Organizational Learning
  • Create and deliver learning and capacity building for students, staff, and faculty around diversity equity, and inclusion, institutional and structural racism/oppression, colonialism, gender justice, and feminism to promote overall intercultural understanding and cultural humility.
  • Provide targeted coaching and training, tools, and resources to support DEI programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources department to facilitate Safe Zone training for the campus community.
  • Work with the Title IX coordinator and serve as a Title IX investigator Develop a restorative justice program to address bias incidents that occur between students, staff, and faculty.
Anti-Racism/Oppression Assessments
  • Complete the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) assessment to become a Qualifying Administrator.
  • Provide coaching and training for staff and faculty on the effective use of tools and templates in the appropriate decision-making process.
  • Prepare an annual report for VPCCI on the learnings and effectiveness of assessments on decision-making across the campus.
Monitoring and Reporting
  • Serve on the Student Success Team (Front-line cross-functional retention committee) to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Measure and monitor the impact of programming, and assist with providing any needed student data for the Institutional Diversity Scorecard.
  • Provide periodic reports to the VCPPI outlining the progress, barriers, and proposed improvements in implementing DEI goals and strategies.
  • Establish and maintain year-over-year metrics in collaboration VCPPI and other college departments to demonstrate progress in the retention, graduation rates of underrepresented groups.
  • Work with Student Affairs to approve visual images prior to campus dissemination.
  • Work in conjunction with the Marketing and Communications Department to update DEI website info and monitor social media.
  • Manage budget and assessment projects.
Relationship Management/Development
  • Participate in local, state and national diversity, equity and inclusion networks, and partnerships to ensure practices and policies are in keeping with the most effective practices to improve underrepresented students graduation rates.
MINIMUM EDUCATION
  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, and Psychology, Organizational Leadership, Education or appropriately related field is required.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
  • At least 5 to 7 years of professional experience in Higher Education institutions emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience in the development of and facilitating diversity and inclusion,, orientation/transition programs is preferred.
  • Experience with Title IX investigation is preferred.
  • Training and certification in equity and inclusion-related education are preferred.

  • Being cognizant to bias, culturally intelligent, self-aware, building trust, empowering others, and encouraging authenticity and collaboration.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of the Higher Education institutions.
  • Experience coaching and advising students, staff, and faculty.
  • Experience collaborating with other departments and working effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with contracting as it relates to event planning.
  • Experience with budget management and educational software in Higher Education.
  • Experience with data collection and analysis for program evaluation.
