The Office of Veterans Affairs mission is to promote student success at East Tennessee State University. On ETSU's nationally-recognized Veteran Friendly Campus, the Director of Veterans Affairs primary responsibilities include:

  • Setting vision and providing leadership for the unit and within the Division of Student Life and Enrollment related to veteran students support and advocacy.
  • Primary leader of veteran students support and advocacy and provide leadership within the region and state.
  • Lead on campus training for faculty, staff, and students on issues impacting veteran's college enrollment and success.
  • Provide seamless transition for Student Veterans into the University by directing, implementing, and monitoring services and certifications for veterans.
  • Daily administrative duties.
  • Counseling students regarding benefits.
  • Performing, screening, and submitting certifications for students utilizing the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) educational benefits as well as monitoring fee deferment and academic records for compliance with VA rules and regulations.
  • Managing all VA educational certifications, initiatives, and assistance for veterans and veteran-dependent students.
  • Managing staff and programs to support retention and recruitment of military affiliated students.
  • Fosters campus inclusion by designing and implementing awareness programs, which articulate both the benefits of having Student Veterans on campus and the challenges of transitioning student veterans into the community.
  • Ensures University remains compliant and prepares the University for annual Veterans Administration compliance inspections, key to retaining ETSU's eligibility for GI Bill ® receipt.
  • Chairs the Veteran Student Success Committee and participates as a member on the Veterans Affairs Standing Committee (VASC) which examines ways the university can reinforce and enhance its Military Friendly Status.
  • Coordinates and confirms submission of Quillen College of Medicine and Gatton College of Pharmacy catalogs annually for approval by the SAA.
  • Provides oversight and guidance to the execution budget for Outreach and Marketing.
  • Monitors Student Veteran academic progress, course enrollment and other reporting requirements in conjunction with the Registrar's Office, and serves (along with department staff) as an Early Intervention Specialist for students showing signs of distress.
  • Manages department website, social media accounts, email accounts, and newsletters.
  • Attends Advisory Committee meetings and informs them of changes to the GI Bill® which can/will affect Military Affiliated Students.
  • Updates the Memorandum of Understanding between ETSU and the Department of Defense for the use of Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force Tuition Assistance.
  • Collaborates with campus partners on official military related events.

The Director of Veterans Affairs reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Enrollment. The Director is overall responsible for:

  • Managing the veteran student lounge.
  • Planning and implementing the Buc Hero program.
  • Advising the Student Veterans of America organization.
  • Supervising all full-time, part-time and student employees within the department.
  • Collaborating with University Relations to develop marketing initiatives (for veterans and students receiving educational benefits) that are supported by outreach and recruitment activities.
  • Generating community support for veterans attending ETSU through participation in community and civic groups (ie: VFW, Tri-Cities Military Affairs committee, etc.).

  • Knowledge of military acronyms across all the services
  • Ability to communicate effectively to large groups or individuals.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret data.
  • Ability to counsel students and parents regarding university related matters.
  • Ability to work independently towards enrollment goals and objectives.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally-accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Veterans' benefits programs.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, intercultural, and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies and diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated dedication to the Student Veteran population.
  • Travel required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from a regionally-accredited institution.
  • Previous military service with honorable discharge and/or 10 years as a military family member or uniformed service member (served on Active Duty and/or the Reserves/National Guard of any branch).
  • Four years experience working with Student Veterans or active duty service personnel.
  • Knowledge of Veterans' education benefits and student financial aid.
  • Knowledge of military registry transcript systems.
  • Computer knowledge/utilization of Banner student system.
