Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Enrollment Marketing for SJSU Online, the Web Developer and Designer provides web/mobile design solutions in a collaborative team environment. Responsibilities include developing and implementing an effective web experience that supports SJSU's Online marketing efforts, as well as the management of digital channels including websites, email marketing, and social media, with a focus on driving enrollment. Deliverables will reflect established graphic and visual standards, based on departmental and program philosophy and institutional brand. The Web Developer and Designer also works independently and creatively to design and provide unique and effective marketing materials and campaigns for the SJSU Online and San José State University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead concept creation and user interface design, evaluate user journey and manage the digital creation and optimization process for various digital marketing deliverables.
  • Produce all forms of online materials: emails, web advertisements, online user experiences and web user interfaces, including effective navigation and information architecture, wireframes, screen flows, style guides and all pieces necessary for a programmer to build a complete product.
  • Create wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site architecture to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas.
  • Work with developers and technology experts to ensure designs are functionally and technologically sound.
  • Conceptualize and implement original ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness into complex design.
  • Design user experiences / interfaces / sites for use by individuals with a range of visual, auditory, motor/mobility and cognitive abilities.
  • Ensure visual alignment of digital assets across all media.
  • Work with developers and technology experts to ensure designs are functionally and technologically sound.
  • Develop detailed design guidelines for the SJSU Online website including site navigation and structure, sitemaps, and page elements.
  • Confer and consult with University departments and third-party vendors to develop ideas and concepts, prepare bids, provide project specifications, and create composites based on needs, web / mobile technology constraints, and budgetary considerations.
  • Assess usability and accessibility of website and mobile apps.
  • Provide and recommend effective design and marketing solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies; provide thought leadership and perspective for adoption.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proven experience in web design, layout, and information architecture (CSS optimization, building wireframes, template design, site mapping, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in site design, typography and layout portfolio representative of design work completed
  • Extensive knowledge of communications and graphic design theory; advanced skills in graphic art, design and illustration
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright laws relative to the use of graphic and textual materials Knowledge of production techniques and processes and a demonstrated understanding of marketing communications
  • Demonstrated experience in photography and photo manipulation.
  • Expertise and proficiency with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript development.
  • Experience with wireframing and prototyping software such as Invision, Sketch or Adobe Xd.
  • Familiarity with CMS platforms such as Omni CMS, Adobe Experience and knowledge of latest web and mobile technologies
  • Knowledge of printing process (separations, CMYK, spot colors, etc.) and experience working with printing and production companies
  • Proven experience with managing multiple jobs simultaneously; working creatively and following detailed instructions when required
  • Unique design point of view and ability to clearly articulate it in various settings
  • Understanding of web development processes, user flows, information architecture, responsiveness and usability
  • Experience with website analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics)
  • Demonstrate ability to design in an agile UX/UI environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate different user scenarios, end-to-end experiences, screen flows to both developers and stakeholders; excellent organization skills a must

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent, in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field of study
  • Three years of full-time experience with graphic application and publishing tools required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in design field or equivalent
  • Three years of experience in designing for print, web or mobile or seven years of experience in design, layout and illustration


Classification: Graphic Designer III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,500/month - $6,400/month
Salary Range: $4,104/month - $7,425/month
