Job Summary

The Copywriter and Content Manager is a member of the SJSU Online marketing team and reports to the Senior Director of Enrollment Marketing. This individual conceives and writes compelling, influential content that connects with and converts users across digital and traditional media. The Copywriter and Content Manager works to ensure all content and copy embodies the university brand, voice, and tone.

The Copywriter and Content Manager must be passionate about writing and be a creative storyteller who can connect with prospective students, staff and faculty, and external audiences. The Copywriter and Content Manager works closely with a team of creative professionals who thrive when faced with new challenges and who use an organized workflow to deliver results in a fast-paced environment. Working for the SJSU Online marketing team requires a keen interest in the life of a Spartan, a persistent curiosity in developing effective ways to connect with prospective, non-traditional students, and a high degree of organizational skill.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write, edit, and publish conversion-focused content for web pages, blogs, editorials, press releases, and other channels targeting various SJSU Online market segments.
  • Create and test innovative social media content and concepts across all SJSU Online social channels.
  • Write and edit advertising, promotional, and marketing content across digital and print channels to effectively describe and promote SJSU Online services and programs.
  • Develop scripts for video and radio.
  • Leverage search engine optimization (SEO) best practices and use available analytics to develop creative concepts rooted in user behavior and interests.
  • Measure and evaluate content to find content gaps and optimization opportunities.
  • Clarify a high volume of information into simple, intuitive, influential call to action (CTA) content that connects with targeted audiences and leads them through a sales life cycle funnel including nurturing campaigns with the goal of converting them from prospective to enrolled students.
  • Contribute to the development of content strategy.
  • Work with project managers, creative, and technical teams to ensure concepts and copy tones are on brand and strategically sound.
  • Aid in the development of the SJSU brand and the SJSU Online brand extension; maintain, elevate, and serve as the voice of the University to target audiences.
  • Understand the University’s various marketing audiences and how they find, consume, and digest content.
  • Proofread and edit content to ensure consistent voice, style, and quality.
  • Maintain accurate, current statuses for all projects in the project management system.
  • Communicate effectively to institutional stakeholders, University alumni, and potential donors.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert writing, editorial, interpersonal communication, active listening, analytical skills
  • Ability to effectively use all communication methods and formats and to use expertise, as well as persuasion and negotiation skills, to build consensus to achieve short- and long-term goals and objectives
  • Ability to effectively use applicable information systems and applications in analysis, research, and reporting activities and projects
  • Strong knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Comprehensive knowledge of web communications with the ability to develop and execute communications in evolving media to effectively promote and position the university
  • Expert in web content standards, blogging, email marketing, and social media marketing
  • Knowledge in marketing automation software platforms (e.g. Marketo) to develop but not limited to newsletters, drip campaigns, and landing pages
  • Knowledge in social media platforms/tools (e.g. Hootsuite, SocialSprout, Oktopost), and an understanding of audience demographics and how they use these platforms to guide content and technology (e.g., Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Google, Reddit, Snapchat, Pinterest, Periscope, blogs, wikis, RSS, etc.)
  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge in project management including research and analytical methodologies
  • Ability to understand and analyze complex problems from a future-oriented and broad interactive perspective and readily develop proactive solutions that integrate strategic goals into tactical operations
  • Extensive knowledge in data and analytics to measure impact, create metrics reports and refine strategies (e.g., Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, various social tools.)
  • Skills and ability with photo and video editing software (online and native applications) is necessary
  • Knowledge of web usability, accessibility, browser compatibility, design, prototyping and deploying mobile-friendly, responsive websites.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of digital communications, including the technical aspects of various media
  • Ability to work in relevant applications; including but not limited to, browser tools, content management systems, source code editors, photography editing software, blogging platforms, social media management tools and email marketing tools

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training
  • Six years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communication, English, creative writing, journalism, marketing, advertising, or a related field
  • Three years of writing, content strategy, and editing experience
  • Knowledge and experience in project management (i.e. Asana), marketing automation platforms (.e.g Marketo), and creative process workflow, content management systems (e.g., Omni CMS, Wordpress, Adobe Experience), and scoping of projects
  • Strong understanding of web, social, and digital content best practices relating to specific audience segments
  • Experience in researching, interviewing, other intelligence-gathering techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to work with high emotional intelligence, prolific attention to detail, and a preference for iterative problem solving to find the best solution


Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist Exempt III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,000/month - $7,500/month
Salary Range: $5,908/month - $11,481/month
