The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position in Bilingual/Biliteracy Education. The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. We seek candidates who share our commitment to educational equity, linguistic and social justice, and the high-quality education of students from traditionally underrepresented communities marginalized by systemic inequalities. We seek candidates who are qualified to serve at an HSI—someone who can contribute to campus and classroom environments that are positive and affirming of the race, ethnicity, language, and cultural experiences of Latinx and other minoritized students. We seek candidates who are committed to embracing the remarkable diversity within our student body and university community, enhancing the cultural wealth and funds of linguistic knowledge our students bring to campus, and seeking to disrupt persistent deficit-oriented views of bilingual/multilingual and racialized learners. We are especially interested in recruiting bi/multilingual individuals whose scholarly work includes attention to the concerns of raciolinguistic marginalization, the politics of language and colonization, and the intersection of language with issues of race, ethnicity, migration, social class, gender, sexuality, identity, and power within bilingual education settings.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate elementary education courses in bilingual/biliteracy education and related content areas, and developing, presenting, and publishing original research—especially research regarding multilingualism, linguistic marginalization, the politics of language and colonization, or other matters of language and power in bilingual/multilingual learning settings—in a sustained line of inquiry. Other responsibilities include conducting research at the intersection of bilingual/multilingual education, English as an additional or world language, modern languages, and early childhood and elementary education; contributing to department and college efforts in program planning, implementation, and evaluation as well as collaborative initiatives with PK-12 partners in education; engaging in innovative program development efforts in line with accreditation/state mandates and professional standards; supporting student recruitment efforts; serving on masters committees; and providing service to the department, college, university, and the professional community.

Texas State University holds a Carnegie Classification of Doctoral University–Higher Research Activity and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain eligibility for the State of Texas’ National Research University Fund. Texas State University is an HSI of 38,000 students located along the ancient and sacred San Marcos River in San Marcos, Texas, a linguistically diverse city midway between Austin and San Antonio. The university also has a campus in Round Rock, Texas, just north of Austin.

The mission of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is to teach and care for its students in culturally sustaining ways towards preparing them to be culturally responsive education professionals who are knowledgeable about and effective in meeting the diverse needs of society and students in PK-20 settings.  Through school and community partnerships, the Department seeks to advance research-based inquiry, theoretical frameworks, and instructional approaches that influence practice and policy. We seek a dynamic, innovative scholar who merits appointment as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on established university and department standards. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and rank. The successful candidate will be headquartered at the university’s main campus in San Marcos and will teach courses, as needed, at both the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses.
