Summary of Job Duties:The KUAR politics and government reporter will serve as the station’s primary reporter on the issues of politics and government as it relates to Arkansas and KUAR-FM’s listening area in particular. This person will produce news and informational reports for the KUAR-FM broadcast listening audience and region, write stories for the station’s website and post regularly on KUAR’s social media accounts. Content should be applicable locally, but may be regionally and nationally focused depending on the issue. The reporter will also participate in station and partner events to speak about their work with station listeners, members and the general public. The reporter will be supervised by the News Director and work collaboratively with station staff, including the programming, business and development teams. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution;
  • Two (2) years of news experience including anchoring or hosting, or news reporting.


Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in journalism or a related field;
  • Two (2) years of reporting experience with hosting or anchoring experience in a public media organization;
  • Experience posting news stories to a website using a Content Management System and with computer operations;
  • Experience promoting news stories through social media and working with a website content management system.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research, report, write, produce, and edit long-form and short-form news stories primarily covering issues of politics and government for broadcast on KUAR-FM and publication on ualrpublicradio.org;
  • Produce a consistent mix of daily news stories, feature-length reports and interviews with newsmakers. Produce two-way interviews with newsmakers and take part in two-way interviews with KUAR hosts;
  • Participate in weekly newsroom meetings to plan short-term and long-term coverage, pitch story ideas and accept assignments for broadcast, website and social media;
  • Assist the news director in assigning stories and editing reports from other KUAR reporters, reporting partners, and interns, as needed;
  • Serve as KUAR’s primary reporter for Arkansas General Assembly during general and fiscal legislative sessions, reporting on the work of the legislature daily, producing reports, tracking issues of importance, and aiding the news director in coordinating the efforts of other KUAR reporters and reporting partners in covering the issues of the Arkansas Legislature for the KUAR broadcast and online audiences;
  • Serve as KUAR’s primary reporter for issues related to state, county and city governments and political issues involving Arkansas and its public office holders and political candidates, filing regular reports, and aiding the news director in coordinating the efforts of other station reporters and reporting partners in covering these issues;
  • Localize national political stories by talking regularly and building relationships with members of Arkansas’s congressional delegation;
  • Operate assigned equipment, including but not limited to audio recorders, digital cameras and computers;
  • Serve as a fill-in anchor for KUAR’s morning and afternoon drive-time programs as needed;
  • Participate and aid in the production of KLRE/KUAR station events, promotional materials, fund drives, and station tours;
  • Adhere to standards of journalistic and professional excellence and integrity common to the National Public Radio code of ethics and the Society of Professional Journalists code of integrity;
  • Adhere to the Public Media Code of Integrity in professional and personal life as it is applicable to your work for KUAR;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to research, report, and write news stories for broadcast;
  • Ability to produce shorter, spot news stories while simultaneously working on longer, in-depth stories and/or interviews;
  • Ability to operate a digital audio recorder, use a microphone and edit digital audio;
  • Must have effective on-air performance demonstrating good news judgment and knowledge of state and local events, newsmakers, and state issues;
  • Ability to operate collaboratively online and in an office setting with Microsoft 365 and G Suite applications such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs or similar applications;
  • Knowledge of Arkansas and Little Rock regional news, politics and community issues, or a demonstrated willingness to learn;
  • Familiarity with public radio news and programming;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation to cover news events in the field;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours.


Salary Information:

$37,000 - $39,000
