Position Information

This is a full-time, temporary position.

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up in excess of 50 lbs.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Career Center Director, the Career Coach at the CSUDH Career Center supports the advancement of students' career development by providing effective career counseling, coaching and advising, and who leads counseling and career services for designated college(s) liaison areas (2 liaison roles available: Colleges of Natural & Behavioral Sciences & Arts & Humanities). The Career Coach assists with programming consistent with the goals and objectives of the Career Center. The Career Center at CSUDH is a centralized Career Center. This staff member will report to the Director of the Career Center and receive daily lead direction from the Lead Career Coach.

Qualifications

Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Experience in the field of career development, working in a Career Center at a public or private university.
Experience with career-management systems, i.e. Handshake.

Responsibilities

40% - Support the coaching & career readiness efforts for students in liaison area to include a significant focus on relationship building with College leadership, faculty and staff. Often supports students outside designated college or liaison areas as needed. Increase student participation in career counseling, coaching, and advising through a variety of formats including drop-in interactions, individual appointments, and presentations/workshops. Help students understand the relationship between self-knowledge and major/career choice through formal and informal career assessments. Provide students with relevant occupational, industry, labor market, educational, and employment information that helps them to explore a wide range of major/career options. Increase awareness and promotion of experiential education and High-Impact Practices (HIPs) opportunities to students. Through use of the Appreciative Advising model, empower students to design their lives with passion, purpose, & opportunity: Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, & Don't Settle. Improve student preparedness for job search activities and professionalism in the workplace. Assists students with preparing resumes, interviewing skills and searching for jobs & internships electronically. Work closely with academic advising units and the Workforce Integration Institute to inform best practices, opportunities for cross-collaboration & learning, as well as shared knowledge & resources.

40% - Develops career readiness programs, specialized events and leads the coordination of career fairs/expos; includes working on marketing & communication of such events to campus stakeholders. Researches, drafts, and facilitates multiple workshops related to career readiness topics. Collaborates with our Outreach & Engagement Team to interact with perspective students and newly admitted students. Joins site visits with Lead Employer Engagement Specialist to employers to develop and promote internships and career opportunities in industry/college specific areas. Coordinates activities between Career Center and one or more Academic/University Partners. Helps students from a wide variety of backgrounds navigate complex challenges in their career and professional development journey. Offers understanding and resources to help students & alumni research options and develop individualized solutions, as they make life-changing decisions. Implement specialized workshops & programming for student success, cultural, and student support units across campus. *Oversee social media engagement and content updates on the Career Center website.

10% - Conducts ongoing research for students and campus partners to provide information and feedback about recruitment and after-graduation activities via our outcomes survey. Researches & reviews reports on labor market & industry demands (regionally & nationally), salaries, recruitment activities and other information, to assist students in their career exploration. Tracks career coaching related data, drafts reports, and prepares formal & informal reports to the Director of the Career Center & Lead Career Coach on an on-going basis. Runs data & analytics reports on CRM & related systems to inform practices, policies, procedures, places for improvement, and document programming.

10% - Other duties as assigned.
