The Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology Department (MCP) is seeking aSenior Financial Analyst who will have financial responsibilities fortwo closely linked units - MCP and Research Animal Resources (RAR). Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology is a basic science department within the School of Medicine. MCP provides leadership in biomedical research on animal models of human disease. Department faculty conduct translational research using animal models of AIDS, cancer, degenerative CNS disease, cardiovascular disease, and infectious diseases. The Department's postdoctoral training program trains veterinary scientists for careers in biomedical research.

The Department has an annual budget of roughly $11 million primarily funded by sponsored projects and supports 20 full and part-time faculty, over 20 postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research and administrative staff of 20. RAR is a service center under the Office of the Associate Provost for Research and is the Johns Hopkins central support service for animal procurement, housing, clinical care, and veterinary research support. RAR has an annual budget of $12 million funded by service fees and a staff of 100, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, managers, technical and administrative staff, and a unionized animal care staff of 45. The two departments are closely linked with all the RAR faculty and fellows appointed in MCP.


As a central resource, this position will help createoperational scalability by providing data and tools for decision-making, resulting inimproved financial and administrative processes. This position will report to MCP and RAR Administrator and will assist with developing tools for internal controls/compliance.

The Sr. Financial Analyst assists in the development and monitors and maintains annual operating budgets for MCP and RAR and oversees departmental discretionary and endowment accounts.

Responsible for assisting in control of established budgets by overseeing loading of budgets (in concert with the Administrator), reconciling budget information and changes, and extracting and analyzing financial data to assist in the management of the two units’ operations. Generates monthly financial reports and monitors revenues and expenditures (for various business lines, including but not limited to designated and discretionary funds, affiliated institution funds, general funds, etc.) against budget. Performs comprehensive financial analysis relating to business or research trends to improve Departmental financial effectiveness and compliance with JHU, and or agency regulations and restrictions.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and assume a lead role in the development of the two units’ annual budgets.
  • Interpret and review financial data to evaluate and determine financial performance and financial projections.
  • Ensure that expenditure for budgets is monitored and that reports are prepared to maintain balanced accounts.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial transactions, accruals, journalentries,and non-payroll cost transfers within MCP and RAR; serve as backup to other members of the team.

Financial Analysis:

  • Prepare monthly reports (ongoing and ad hoc) for performance management monitoring, including Control Salary, Cost Overruns, Cash Deficit, Undistributed Budgets, Financial Status Reports updates.
  • Assist in the development of the Research Animal Resources rate schedule using the methods described in the Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Resource Facilities. Ensure billing activities are compliant with institutional and federal policies.
  • Provide support to the billing functions of the animal facility management software, eSirius.
  • Complete revenue and expense variance analysis on designated area(s) within the units’ as required. Resolve any expense posting errors and communicate proper expense allocation as needed.
  • Oversee /complete monthly reconciliation of PCards (and other designated accounts/programs, as specified).
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions with direction (as necessary) from others. Must be able to interpret technical and detailed guidelines, policies, and proceduresandexplain or describe moderately complex information and presentation materials.

Financial Reporting:

  • Assist in updating/preparing Departmental dashboards and executive summaries as assigned, generating and distributing monthly reports, and creating new reports to improve MCP and RAR monitoring of revenues/expenses.
  • Ensure expenditures for budgets are monitored, and reports are prepared to maintain balancedaccounts.Work requires analytical competency to gather and interpret data and proficiency withfinancialreporting systems to build reports.
  • Create financial reports for leadership teams. Assist with the development offinancialreportsforforecasting,trending,and results analysis.

Other:

  • Serve as backup for preparing and processing grant submissions, online check requests, travel reimbursements, employee reimbursements, purchase orders, check deposits, and gift donations. Responsible for accurate data entry.
  • Demonstrate ability for self-direction and initiation and work independently and as part of ateamto address problems/tasks.
  • Must be organized and able to appropriatelyprioritizeresponsibilities in afast-pacedenvironment.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or another related field.
  • Five years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.
  • Additional education (Master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Financial analysis experience including monitoring, organizing, controlling monetary and non-monetary resources. Experience with pre-and post-award procedures for grants, contracts, and training grants. Knowledge of financial and statistical principles.
  • Advanced knowledge in the use of spreadsheets, presentations and word processing required
  • Knowledge of SAP accounting system practices and implementation within the Hopkins environment desirable
  • MS EXCEL – Advanced, with demonstrated knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other advanced Excel tools and functions required
  • Additional Microsoft Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Access- strongly desired)
  • Self-motivated. Ability to write clear, concise, professional reports and correspondence Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to positively interact with all levels of staff.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
