The Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics is seekingResearch Assistant who will perform research in medical robotics and medical devices with a focus onthe development of mechanical systems and components,custom research fixtures, and data collection devices. The position involves work on one collaborative project funded by National Institutes of Health, under grant # 1R43CA261381, PI. Peymon Ghazi PhD (sub-award from Malcova LLC), title “Patient-specific narrow beam breast CT”.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research, design, and validate complex assemblies.
  • Analyze problems, provide solutions, and provide support.
  • Document designs, assembly procedures, and installation protocols.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data for publication. Develop and maintain project wiki page.
  • Position will receive work assignments on weekly basis and will be expected to complete most of them independently.
  • Interface with faculty, students, engineers, designers, and lab personnel
  • Primary research interactions will take place within the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (lcrs.jhu.edu) and Malcova LLC.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • At least 1-year experience in an academic research environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of robots and other medical equipment mechanical systems.
  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles needed to design, fabricate, and validate work.
  • Strong background in complex assembly design.
  • Experience in material selection and mechanical design principles.
  • Demonstrated computer modeling/computer aided design experience.
  • Previous experience working on or with robotic and/or mechatronics systems.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge and capability in manufacturing processes, both traditional (lathe, mill, casting, etc.) and modern (laser cutter, 3D printing, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision. Able to conduct experiments autonomously according to precise instructions. Able to exercise independent judgment to resolve minor problems arising while conducting experiments.
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail.
  • Preference given for experience inacademic or industry research environment.
  • Preference for strong fabrication background.
  • Preferred ProE/Solidworks experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering best practices.
  • Facility with Matlab, Python, or similar computational environment
  • Project management skills and the ability to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize jobs and organize work effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and succinctly.
  • Ability to communicate with scientists and researchers from a variety of disciplines.
  • Ability to manage own area effectively using compliance with health and safety policy and university procedures.
  • Self-motivation and an ability to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out research tasks.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely to a level consistent with publications in highly regarded international journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
  • Ability to contribute to a complex research program.

Starting Salary Range: $16.42 - $22.57/hr (commensurate with experience)
