FAIC/Kress Conservation Fellow

Working within the Sheridan Libraries’ Department of Conservation and Preservation, the FAIC/Kress Conservation Fellow will take a primary role in the documentation and treatment of the recently acquired "Women of the Book" (WOTB) collection, consisting of more than 500 manuscripts, printed books, and ephemera ranging in date from 1460-1800. The culmination of this work will be a major exhibition of the collection in fall 2022, for which the Fellow will also participate in the planning and installation leading up to the opening of the exhibition.

The FAIC/Kress Conservation Fellow will work closely with Conservation and Preservation staff to develop treatment protocols and to design the binding survey/database. This is a twelve-month, full-time position that will require regular transportation to the Evergreen Museum and Library, where the WOTB collection will be housed.

Responsibilities of the position include:

The job duties of the FAIC/Kress Conservation Fellow include:

  1. Documenting and treating items from the WOTB collection which have been selected for exhibition,
  2. Surveying the historic bindings and monastic repairs of the WOTB collection, and creating a “linked data” database to capture the results of the survey,
  3. Assisting in the discussions with curators, designers, etc. surrounding the WOTB exhibition,
  4. Assisting in the fabrication of exhibition mounts and installation of the exhibition,
  5. Participating in outreach activities associated with the collection and the exhibition.
Qualifications
  • Recent graduate of a North-American graduate program in Conservation
Preferred
  • Experience in the conservation of books and library materials
  • Experience with database creation utilizing linked data terminology
