Job Summary

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is encouraging applications for an Electrical Engineer I or II to join our team! An Electrical Engineer I or II has shown capability to perform designs, analyses, and/or perform tests with support from peers, the lead EE, and/or other mentors. They show proficiency in more than one field of EE, and/or interact with the other subject areas of engineering within LASP. Designs are vetted by the project team, lead EE, peer-reviewers, etc.

LASP at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA. We are the world’s only academic research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Designs, tests, debugs, and operates space flight electronics.
  • Work through complex production documentation and processes, and shepherd design through basic production functions.
  • Work closely with other engineers and other fields (Systems, Mechanical, Thermal, Software, Science, QA, and Project Management) as required.
  • Perform design and reliability analyses including Parts Stress Analysis and Worst-Case Analysis and other analyses as required.
  • Work with external vendors for layout, assembly, etc. as required.
  • Assist in requirements generation and verification.
  • Generate peer-review and NASA review materials.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and / or Electrical and Computer Engineering (other degrees will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis).
What You Will Need
  • Design knowledge in one these EE fields:
    • Electrical Wiring Harness Design and Manufacturing
    • Ground Support Equipment Design (hardware and/or software)
    • Embedded Microprocessor System Design (hardware and/or software)
    • Power Conversion (Low-Voltage and/or High-Voltage Power Supplies)
    • Digital Printed Wiring Board (a.k.a. Printed Circuit Board) Layout
    • Digital FPGA Design and Verification (VHDL/Verilog)
    • Analog/Detector/Mechanism Control Design and Monitoring
    • Low noise analog circuit design
    • Motor controller design
  • Experience with schematic design tools (OrCad, Allegro, Eagle, Altium).
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools (PSpice, LTspice, etc.).
  • Experience with layout tools (PADS, Eagle, Altium, ORCAD PCB, CAM350, or equivalent).
