The Department of Education invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, beginning August 2022. Candidates are required to have by start date a Ph.D. (or Ed.D.) in Education. We seek candidates whose work focuses on social foundations of education with specialties in one or more of the following areas: history of education, philosophy of education, sociology of education, and educational policy studies. Candidates are expected to teach these required courses in the program: EDUC 213: “The US Education System,” EDUC 390: “Critical Pedagogies,” and EDUC 421: “Senior Seminar,” and these electives: EDUC 215: “Legal Issues in US Education” and EDUC 300: “Philosophy of Education.” In addition, the successful candidate will offer electives in their research field that complement and enrich current program offerings within the department specifically and the college more broadly. Pursuit of transdisciplinary connections across the college would build on a rich tradition among our department faculty who have established ties with other departments, programs, and curricular initiatives (e.g., Data Analytics, the Writing Program, Denison Seminars). The candidate will teach a 3/2 course load of five courses per academic year.

The successful candidate will be an engaged teacher who is invested in continually developing and strengthening pedagogical practices that support undergraduate student learning and facilitate connections across the liberal arts. Demonstrating one’s knowledge of, and skill within a range of approaches to teaching and learning is especially important for the faculty in the Department of Education as it models the praxis orientation that is core to our department’s mission.  Experience teaching in an elementary or secondary school setting is desirable. A productive research program and active contribution to the life of the department, institution, and the larger community are essential.

Denison offers a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits package, and professional development support for activities that support one’s teaching, scholarship, and capacity to lead in the diverse arenas of academic work, including travel to conferences. Denison is a selective residential liberal arts college of 2300 students located in central Ohio 25 miles from Columbus, the state capital. To achieve our mission as a liberal arts college, we continually strive to attract and hire candidates with diverse backgrounds, experiences and identities. Denison fosters a campus community that recognizes the value of all persons regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic background. For additional information and resources about diversity at Denison, please see our Diversity Guide (https://denison.edu/forms/diversity-guide) . Denison University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer. In addition, we are committed to a holistic approach to faculty development, including providing access to institutional supports such as the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, an innovative Center for Learning and Teaching, and a structured mentoring system, as well as contributing to ongoing conversations about well-being across ranks of the College.

Candidates should submit a cover letter; c.v.; a research statement; and a statement on your teaching philosophy, experience, and effectiveness, including how you will work to foster an inclusive community where students feel a sense of belonging and connection. Within the required materials, please talk about your commitment to a liberal arts education, teaching, mentoring, and working closely with students as a primary responsibility of the job, working with and supporting a diverse student community, and exposing students to a wide range of ideas and perspectives. Finally, candidates will be asked to include the names and email addresses of three references. Please note that letters of reference are only required for select candidates later in the search process.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applications received by October 8, 2021 will be given preference.
