Position Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated postdoctoral researcher dedicated to applying bioinformatics tools to understanding mechanisms of infection and developing new therapies for respiratory tract bacterial infections. The work focuses on infection in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and otitis media and takes a microbial genomics approach leveraging analysis of bacterial strains, respiratory tract samples and data collected over 20 years with an overall aim to develop new therapies ( PNAS 115:E3256, 2018).

The research team consists of:
-Timothy Murphy MD (University at Buffalo)
-Hervé Tettelin PhD (Institute for Genome Sciences, University of Maryland School of Medicine)
-Melinda Pettigrew PhD (Yale University)

Key responsibilities:
• You will use bioinformatics tools to perform computational analyses of datasets including bacterial genomes, RNA -seq, and Nanostring targeted gene expression data, along with other needs as they are identified.
• Integrate and analyze genomic, epidemiological and clinical data from patients with infections caused by respiratory tract bacterial pathogens over 20 years and characterize virulence mechanisms through analysis of bacterial genomes and other metadata.
• Apply and develop innovative solutions for analyzing and visualizing observations from these datasets.
• Use and develop programs and/or scripts, including graphical visualization software, to facilitate large-scale data mining of genomic and transcriptomic datasets.
• Collaborate with other team members and work independently on research projects as assigned by the investigators.

University at Buffalo is an affirmative action equal opportunity employer and, in keeping with our commitment, welcomes all to apply including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
