Hopkins Athletics is multidivisional department with 22 programs competing at the NCAA DIII level and two programs (men’s and women’s lacrosse) competing at the NCAA Division I level (BIG 10 Conference). The department also hosts a variety of robust recreational activities such as club sports, intramurals, and fitness programming.

In the summer of 2021, the department will complete a $27 million dollar renovation and expansion of the Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being. This facility will feature all new state-of-the-art equipment for strength and cardiovascular training, expanded group exercise offerings, and mindfulness and meditation programming. The focus is on fostering holistic student health and a community of care. In addition, The Bill Starr Varsity Weight Room will also undergo a complete renovation in 2021 by adding an additional 3,800 square feet of team and individual student-athlete training space. This investment will include all new training equipment, a nutrition station, and the latest in performance technology.

The Hopkins Athletics department seeks an innovative and forward thinkingCommunications Specialist beginning ASAP. This role must leadwithin the framework of a best in class Sports Information Department at Johns Hopkins University. Specific Duties & Responsibilities (Will Vary Per Position):

    Serve as the main point of contact for all Johns Hopkins Athletics television broadcasts with JHU’s national television partners (ESPN, Big Ten Network (BTN)). Facilitate all on-site production needs for ESPN and BTN, including, but not limited to, IT requirements, staging areas, talent and camera locations and other needs as dictated by television partners.
    Produce and direct live productions of Johns Hopkins Athletics events annually. This includes the hiring and training of all student announcers, camera operators, graphics specialists, replay operators and directors. Serve as the main point of contact with Johns Hopkins’ streaming provider. Produce and publish video on demand content for the Department of Athletics. Conceptualize and produce the annual senior-athlete video. Provide content as requested by internal (Blue Jays Unlimited, Admissions, Alumni Association, Development) and external constituents. Organize and chronicle all historical video for the Department of Athletics. In consultation and collaboration with other members of the Athletic Communications staff, develop social media content for the more than 40 social media accounts that support Johns Hopkins Athletics and individual teams. Serve as the main point of contact with Daktronics in support of the three (3) video boards in place (Homewood Field, Goldfarb Gymnasium, Babb Field). Design and develop all video board content to be utilized on gameday. Serve as the main internal graphic designer for Department of Athletics. This includes designing a variety of items, including program and media guide covers, social media graphics, the department’s annual report and any other materials needed to share and promote the department’s messaging. Provide support and content creation for all Johns Hopkins sponsorship and marketing efforts. Develop and produce any other items (video or other) as requested (Director of Athletics communications pieces, recruiting videos, facility tours, promotional items, year-in-review digital media, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Video Production, Sport Management or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years experience in a college athletic communications office.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills; must possess strong writing and video editing ability; proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite software and live in-game production technology and knowledge of various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) a must.

Key Relationships:

  • The Communications Specialist is directly supervised by the Associate Athletic Director, Director of Athletic Communications.
  • This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, alumni, and other outside constituencies.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • General office, athletic facility, and campus environment.
  • The position will require work outside and in inclement weather.
  • Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary.
  • Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and occasional lifting is required.
  • Computer usage involving repetitive and/wrist motion is required.
  • The position will be a full-time, fiscal year appointment, with frequent evening and weekend work required throughout the year with those dates determined by a supervisor.
  • Operates on turf, grass, gymnasium, and training rooms.
  • General open office and campus environment.
  • Position involves sitting, movement, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds in coaching and training situations.
  • Frequent travel and early morning/evening/weekend work is required.
