IT@JH Networking, Telecom and Data Ctr is seeking aNetwork Engineer who will contribute to planning, forecasting, implementation, and identification of resource requirements for network backbone infrastructures (inclusive of wireless technologies). The scope of this position typically affects the delivery of campus backbone network resources for a large number of local and wide-area connected buildings.

Trouble-shoot, monitor and maintain network components and functionality on a school/campus/enterprise-wide level. Position provides consultation to IT users in designated business units for aspects of network connectivity functions, issues of increasing traffic, and determining the path between hosts across the network. Candidate communicates with end users about the scheduling and delivery of changes within the network topology and participates in the technical aspects of network changes and workflow.

General summary/purpose

The Network Engineer 1 position will be responsible for the day to day management, monitoring, troubleshooting, and replacing of the wireless infrastructure on the Johns Hopkins University and Medical campuses. This employee will be located on the JHU Homewood campus but have responsibilities across the entire enterprise.

Specific duties & responsibilities

This position will be responsible for designing, managing, and installing small to medium size wireless projects across various enterprise locations. All projects will need to be documented using established templates. The Network Engineer 1 will be responsible for following all documented processes and procedures for monitoringand troubleshooting wireless issues as part of a team. In addition, the engineer will be part of small and large scale fleet replacement efforts across the enterprise. The engineer will be required to participate in larger network projects and should possess excellent teamwork skills.

Specific devices, software, projects for which the position is responsible:
Describe the type of devices and software. How does it work? Who uses it? What is the impact on an employee’s/client’s work? What makes the assignments complex?

Candidates must have some experience with wireless technologies, understand RF signal types and interferers, and be familiar with the Cisco family of wireless network hardware, to include wireless controllers, Cisco Prime, Cisco DNA center, and Cisco ISE. Knowledge of additional RF tools such as Ekahau and NetAlly are beneficial.

Scale/size of area, project and/or system supported

The current wireless infrastructure consists of 17 production controllers, 10,200 access points, 2 monitoring and management platforms, and 6 authentication servers. The Network Engineer 1 should have a solid understanding of the Cisco platform and be able to learn and expand technical knowledge and expertise.

Work location:Primary work location is JHU Homewood campus, but employee will be expected to support the wireless infrastructure enterprise-wide and be willing to travel regionally as needed.

On call requirements :Will be part of on-call rotation roughly once per month

Job Scope/Complexity:

  • Position primarily focuses on entry level to moderately complex designs for data and voice communication systems throughout the Johns Hopkins enterprise.
  • Job complexity includes design/engineering/installation of small to medium sized projects (multiple floors within a building to multiple buildings within a campus), troubleshooting routing and switching protocol issues, and interfacing with customers to understand needs.
  • Typically, this job is focused on a primary Johns Hopkins campus; however, this position is expected to travel throughout Maryland/DC to cover any Johns Hopkins location as required.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Network Analysis & Design:

  • Manage small to medium sized projects and program components (protocol analysis, address space engineering, migration to new systems, scheduling, installations, product research, etc.) by following established guidelines/objectives to deliver service to customers.
  • Responsible for network planning, network infrastructure design and engineering by meeting with network team to discuss plans and alternatives of possible solutions.
  • Develop project planning documents by using established departmental guidelines to deliver successful projects.
  • Produces written reports (e.g., status reports, research results, project plans) by using standard tools to document analysis of a network infrastructure or system.
  • Provide presentations on ideas, designs, plans, and/or solutions by using standard presentation tools to communicate to a variety of audiences.

Installation & Configuration:

  • Install and configure small to medium size networks, including implementation and verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN by using established procedures and tools to deliver quality products to customers.
  • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project. Communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
  • With minimal guidance and/or oversight, install, configure, and interpret results of network analyzers.

Maintain & Troubleshoot:

  • Maintain medium size route and switched networks (0-10,000 nodes), including verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN by following documentation provided for the solution to ensure a stable network
  • Coordinate and solve network issues that have been escalated from tier-1 personnel (Network Analyst, or Network Technician), inclusive of setting up network analyzers and interpreting results, by using standard network analysis tools to provide a successful solution to the problem.
  • Troubleshoot medium size route and switched networks, including verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN, by using standard network analysis tools to provide successful solutions to the customers.
  • Analyze and determine root cause of problems by reviewing hardware vs software, hardware vs firmware, software vs operating system, network vs applications/systems, and patterned vs non-repeatable issues to deliver solution to the problem.

Technical Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with school, campus, or Enterprise-wide peers on assignments.
  • May mentor other staff positions such as Network Analysts, or Network Technicians by reviewing their work to give them guidance with their tasks.

  • General understanding of wireless networking and a solid understanding of wireless LAN technologies.
  • General knowledge of networking technologies within a production data center.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
