Title: Associate Dean & Director of the Office of Intercultural Education





Position Purpose:

The Office of Intercultural Education (OIE) at Bates College is charged with creating a holistic, student-centered environment that: cultivates community, connection, and belonging; provides educational opportunities and resources for students’ success; and facilitates engagement with the broader campus community -- the Associate Dean sets both direction and tone for the office.

The Associate Dean leads and supports a high-performing team of professional and student staff in designing, implementing, and assessing a set of cohesive and integrated programs that foster the academic, co-curricular and personal success of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and first-generation students. Additional responsibilities include: budget planning and oversight; developing partnerships across the institution (e.g., faculty, Academic Affairs, Admission, Advancement, Athletics, Counseling and Psychological Services, Equity and Inclusion, Purposeful Work) to advance the mission of the OIE and improve the student experience; representing the OIE on campus committees and working groups; serving as a resource and partner for on-campus constituencies engaged in equity, inclusion, access, anti-racism, and social justice work; and additional duties as assigned.

Job Duties:
  • Provide vision and leadership for the Office of Intercultural Education, including developing short- and long-term strategic plans.
  • Ensure that equity, inclusion, access, anti-racism, and social justice are central to their work and the delivery of services to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Oversee and support the team in designing and implementing a set of cohesive and integrated programs and services that:
    • Foster the academic, personal, and postgraduate success of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and first-generation students;
    • Facilitate community and connection among individual students, student organizations, and the broader institution; and
    • Provide educational opportunities to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and first-generation students around critical issues of identity and representation.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Campus Life to develop and provide ongoing, structured support and advising for identity-based student organizations.
  • In collaboration with colleagues in Institutional Research, assess the needs of students and efficacy of programs to advance the mission of the OIE and improve the student experience.
  • Be a visible and accessible presence in the OIE and on campus.
  • Foster a workplace culture rooted in mutual trust, respect, and professional boundaries.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education

● Master’s degree required.

Experience

● Minimum of 6-8 years of relevant, professional experience in student support, orientation, and/or higher education programming.
● Experience in the field of student affairs and student-facing equity, inclusion, access, anti-racism, and social justice work.
● Demonstrated success in:
○ Leading and developing a team of professionals;
○ Overseeing the design, implementation, and facilitation of specialized programming;
○ Supporting, coaching, and advising students, particularly BIPOC, LGBTQ+, first-generation, and other historically marginalized and excluded students;
○ Managing crisis situations; and
○ Building coalitions and partnerships across campus constituencies.
● Experience working with and supporting BIPOC, first-generation, and LGBTQ+ students, their families, and campus support structures to facilitate their academic, professional, and personal success and development.

Skills and Knowledge

● Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of college students, particularly positive identity development for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other historically underrepresented populations
● Ability to maintain confidentiality and student privacy as appropriate.
● Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community thoughtfully and effectively.
● Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
● Proficiency in basic data management systems, computer applications, and social media platforms.
● Successfully complete a background check.
