Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies in and around the pool.
- Monitor activities of pool patrons
- Understand and enforce all pool and facility policies and procedures
- Observe the conduct of patrons and communicate openly with patrons/staff in a friendly manner
- Recognize emergencies and respond effectively
- Inspect the facility on a daily basis and report any unsafe conditions or equipment
- Inspect pool deck throughout the day for cleanliness
- Arrive on time to all shifts; find a sub to work shift if a planned absence is necessary
- Have a flexible work schedule and provide up to date and accurate availability as requested
- Test pool and spa water chemistry
- Count pool users and class participants
- Complete any Risk Management reports immediately
- Complete all cleaning duties as assigned
- Attend monthly in-service training and other meetings as required
- Work as a team with other lifeguards, aquatics staff and facilities staff.
- Additional duties as assigned by the Aquatics & Safety Coordinator or Graduate Administrator for Aquatics
Required Certification:
- Current Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid
- Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguard and rescue techniques, patron surveillance, emergency preparation and response, and spinal management
