What you'll be doing
  • The Academic Standards Counselor position counsels and coaches students experiencing academic difficulty to encourage student success, retention, and a return to Good Academic Standing.
  • Works within three main student-centered domains: increasing self-awareness, developing academic skills, and helping access and navigate resources.
  • Duties include academic coaching, explaining policies and procedures, making referrals, maintaining records and preparing statistical reports, interpreting career/interest and personality assessments, navigating a variety of academic challenges, participating in ongoing training and development, coordinating with other individuals and entities on campus, and representing the department on various projects, committees, and in meetings as assigned by the director.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in Counseling, Educational Psychology, Student Development Administration, Adult Education, Social Work, or a related Social Science field with at least one year of professional employment related to the Summary of Duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience with theory and practice related to student development, adult learning, study strategies, learning disabilities and challenges, neurodiversity in education, advising, and counseling.
  • Experience in helping students identify strengths and opportunities in their learning behaviors and applying new approaches to achieve academic success.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial interviewing and counseling and coaching techniques.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to, administer and interpret the MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, Clifton Strengths, and other psychometric assessments.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, UVU’s mission and strategic directions.



Skills
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including various electronic media, telephone, e-mail, and other technological platforms.
  • Strong skills in the use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite, email, and academic and campus software platforms (e.g., Banner and Civitas) as applied to management of student records, report preparation, and related activities.

Ability to:
  • Be self-directed and complete tasks without supervision.
  • Develop and implement a variety of support systems, programs, and initiatives related to student success.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team culture.
  • Creatively and independently problem-solve by prioritizing, organizing, and multitasking during peak times while maintaining flexibility to address urgent concerns.
  • Respectfully serve and appreciate individuals with diverse personalities, backgrounds, experiences, and worldviews.
