Montana Technological University, a premier STEM-focused institution in Butte, Montana, seeks nominations and applications for its inaugural Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/ Dean of Students. The vice chancellor is the senior officer charged with providing dynamic and purposeful leadership to a newly restructured division. Motivated by a deep commitment to the student experience and developing leaders in science, engineering, and technology, the vice chancellor is a champion for a holistic student experience, student success, shared governance, and inclusive excellence.

Role of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Dean of Students

The vice chancellor is the senior student affairs officer at the University, providing vision, leadership and strategic direction to the support services and programs that enhance the Oredigger student experience. 

Direct reports to the vice chancellor include the executive director of Enrollment Services, the executive director of Student Success, the associate dean/director of Campus Life, the director of Career Services, and Health, Counseling and Wellness staff. The vice chancellor will have the opportunity to hire an administrative/program support position to support the VC/DOS office.

The vice chancellor is an advocate for student well-being and concerns in every aspect of their collegiate experience. The vice chancellor provides the student life perspective in all aspects of institutional decision-making, from policy setting to programmatic design.

The vice chancellor interacts with parents, faculty, academic and non-academic departments, and the local community in student-related matters. The vice chancellor works closely with other senior leaders, deans and department chairs and must be a collaborative colleague to work effectively across the institution.

Against the backdrop of Montana Tech’s new strategic plan, the vice chancellor will focus on the following strategies and priorities:

 Build a culture of student engagement through a seamless experience that melds the curricular and co-curricular

 Montana Tech has a long history of academic excellence. The vice chancellor will develop a vision and strategic implementation plan for the student experience that complements the academic mission. From pre-admission to post-graduation, the co-curriculum must attend to the whole student and their unique needs. Talented staff have begun this work and the vice chancellor will need to bring together and build a team dedicated to the comprehensive student experience.

 Continue to amplify recruitment and retention strategies to positively impact student success and enrollment

 Building on the work of the enrollment services team, continue to create strategies to meet enrollment targets and attract a diverse class of students who will be successful at Montana Tech. The vice chancellor must bring a spirit of collaboration, transparency, creativity, nimbleness, and fiscal responsibility. Exceptional analytical and technological skills will be critical, as well as the ability to understand and respect shared governance. The vice chancellor will work closely with the provost/vice chancellor for Academic Affairs to create new partnerships in Montana and in the western region. The vice chancellor will work with enrollment services team to enact a comprehensive and strategic enrollment management plan in tandem with the overall institutional strategic goals.

Create partnerships with faculty and colleagues in academic affairs

As Montana’s SPECIAL FOCUS institution, it must attend to the unique nature of its mission. The vice chancellor will build relationships and partnerships with colleagues to address student academic needs and services as well as the out-of-classroom experience. Opportunities exist to elevate the connection between a student’s academic and non-academic experience and the vice chancellor will have a keen understanding of the critical role faculty play. Investments in academic support services are underway, and the vice chancellor will work with a dedicated team to evaluate and strengthen student academic support services.

 Embed career education and career readiness into the curriculum and co-curriculum

The most compelling story Montana Tech can share with our multiple constituents is the impact our graduates make in the community, region, and across industry. In partnership with the Provost, faculty, and Academic Affairs, the vice chancellor will support and further embed career education and readiness throughout the student experience, in support services and will work to strengthen data systems, collection, and analysis.

Create an equity and inclusion strategy that: ensures all students feel like they matter and belong; and addresses equity gaps in enrollment, retention and graduation.

An opportunity for advancing exists in infusing inclusive excellence into every aspect of the co-curricular experience. The vice chancellor will inform and influence strategies that address equity gaps in access and affordability, student success and retention and graduation rates.

 Strengthen and align health, counseling and wellness services

The vice chancellor will have an opportunity to evaluate existing services and address gaps in support services, as well as strengthen, coordinate and align functions. An evaluation of the third- party health center contract is needed as well as an investigation of additional and creative methods for student counseling services and a campus wide wellness strategy.


  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education Administration, or related field of study
  • Five (5) years of progressive student affairs experience in a postsecondary education setting
  • Direct experience managing and leading teams; supervision of personnel
  • Ability to craft and execute data-informed decisions and strategic plans to positively impact student success
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with a variety of stakeholders and diverse populations
  • Flexibility and ability to manage and thrive in an environment with ample workloads, changing priorities and deadlines


  • Excellent written, oral, and public presentation skills
  • Fiscal responsibility; experience in developing and managing budgets
  • Ability to effectively represent Montana Tech and the broad interests of Student Affairs/Enrollment Management with relevant local, state and national entities.


  • Doctorate in Higher Education Administration or a related field of study from an accredited institution
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressive student affairs experience in the postsecondary education setting
