The University of Maine at Augusta is seeking applicants for the
full-time position of Reference and Instruction
Librarian at the UMA Bangor Nottage Library
location. The primary purpose of this position is to provide
library instruction and research support as a member of a team of
librarians at the University of Maine at Augusta. This position
also helps effectively maintain distance library services for
students, staff, and faculty. This individual is responsible for
providing reference assistance as well as library support services
to users. These services include both in-person and virtual library
instruction, face-to-face support of library patrons at the UMA
Library locations in Augusta and Bangor and UMA Centers, creation
of learning objects such as videos and interactive tutorials, and
the completion of other tasks as needed or assigned by the Director
of UMA Libraries.
Essential Functions include:
- Conducts instructional and informational presentations for students and faculty for in-person, online, videoconferencing, and ITV use
- Collaborates with full-time and adjunct faculty teaching at a distance to integrate information literacy into their courses and all academic curricula
- Develops educational learning objects such as LibGuides, videos, classroom activities, and interactive online tutorials
- Assists students with the use of online databases via remote access
- Provides reference assistance by technological means including phone, chat, email, and face to face
- Researches library-related issues, problems, and technologies summarizes findings, and collaborates with librarians to recommend preferred action including policy changes
- Troubleshoots student access problems and recommends changes to UMS IT, and Maine InfoNet staff, as required, to improve services
- Represents UMA Libraries at UMS system committees
- Provides back-up for various online tools, such as the website, Summon, and the database A-Z list
- Collaborates with faculty to ensure course materials and library resources are accessible
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (40 hours per
week) with flexible hours as needed. This position will be
based on the UMA Bangor Campus with occasional travel to
other UMA locations across the state.
Salary: Band 3. The normal hiring
range is mid 30s to low 40s, commensurate with qualifications and

Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program (or non-U.S. equivalent) and one year of relevant service in libraries
- Strong commitment to serving distance library users and willingness to advocate for their needs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in academic libraries
- Extensive computer skills, including web applications
- Demonstrated experience with instructional design
- Experience working with adult learners
- Participates in professional and scholarly organizations
