The Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health (PFRH) invites applications for a Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), a non-tenure track faculty position.

The DGS will guide and strengthen the Masters and Doctoral programs, in collaboration with the educational faculty leadership and the academic program managers.

Responsibilities of the DGS include:
  • Overseeing the implementation and governance of graduate studies within the department
  • Fostering a culture of continuous quality improvement for all PFRH educational activities
  • Promoting a culture that values inclusion, diversity, anti-racism and equity (IDARE)
  • Being accountable for financial activities related to graduate programs
  • Supervising the academic program managers with responsibilities for departmental and school-wide Masters' and Doctoral programs, PFRH Institutes, certificate programs, educational committees, training grants, and other educational activities
  • Reviewing program performance and providing periodic reports (e.g., academic programs, student progress, faculty advisor assignments, funder reports, training grants)
  • Acting as a liaison for school and university wide educational convenings
  • Facilitating connections to professional development opportunities, funding opportunities and awards for graduate students
  • Communicating relevant matters to the program faculty and committees as needed; informing faculty of graduate education-related policies, deadlines, and programs as appropriate
  • Fostering growth of department academic offerings aligned with department expertise and capacity
  • Assuring student handbooks are current, accessible to faculty and students, and aligned with educational competencies
  • Promoting PFRH educational offerings at outside venues (e.g., institutions, conferences)
  • Ensuring website content for academic programs is up to date
PFRH is an interdisciplinary department dedicated to optimizing the health and well-being of individuals, families, and populations across the life course through public health science, teaching and practice locally, nationally, and globally.

The DGS will be hired at the rank commensurate with training and experience. Master’s degree in public health, education, or related discipline required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
