Title: Assistant Dean for First Generation & Bobcat First Programs





Position Purpose:

The Assistant Dean is responsible for developing and leading comprehensive and holistic support services and programming for first-generation students. This includes directing all aspects of the Bobcat First (BFirst)
cohort program, designed to support first-generation students across their four years at Bates. The Assistant Dean will develop, implement, and assess programming that addresses first-generation student needs, interests and concerns, with close attention to intersectional identities. Working collaboratively with other professional and student staff in the Office of Intercultural Education (OIE), the Assistant Dean will create a student-centered environment that: cultivates community and belonging; provides resources for students’ personal, academic, and professional success; and connects students to opportunities for campus engagement. Additional responsibilities include: serving as a Student Support Advisor and case manager (specifically for first-generation students); supervising student workers; and developing partnerships across the institution (e.g., faculty, Academic Affairs, Admission, Advancement, Athletics, Counseling and Psychological Services, Equity and Inclusion, Purposeful Work) to advance the mission of the OIE.

Job Duties:
  • Develop, implement, and assess comprehensive and holistic programming to: foster a sense of community and belonging; facilitate student success; and assist in personal, academic, and professional development of first-generation students.
  • Ensure that equity, inclusion, access, anti-racism, and social justice are central to their work and the delivery of services to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Design and direct all aspects of the Bobcat First cohort program (BFirst), including the pre-orientation program.
  • Build partnerships with Admissions and Student Financial Services to smoothly transition first-generation students from admission to campus life.
  • Design and facilitate training for other Student Support Advisors to bolster inclusive advising practices, particularly around first-generation student support.
  • Build and nurture partnerships with faculty, academic departments, academic support services, and the office of the dean of faculty to provide effective and coordinated programs to support academic, personal, and professional success and development of first-generation students.
  • Be a visible and accessible presence in the OIE, including on nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Cultivate trusting relationships with students while also establishing professional boundaries, ensuring that students can thrive independently and in community with others.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education

● Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience

● Minimum of 4 years of relevant, progressive professional experience in student support, orientation, and/or higher education programming.
● Experience working in student-facing equity, inclusion, access, anti-racism, and social justice work.
● Experience and demonstrated success with:
○ Program design and implementation, with special emphasis on programs for first-generation students;
○ Supporting, coaching, and advising students with a variety of identities and lived experiences;
○ Working with historically excluded student populations, particularly first-generation; and
○ Producing intersectional programming for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and other students of color.

Skills and Knowledge

● Ability to maintain confidentiality and student privacy as appropriate.
● Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community thoughtfully and effectively.
● Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
● Proficiency in basic data management systems, computer applications, and social media platforms.
● Successfully complete a background check.
