Eligibility, The Department of Music is seeking TA applicants
Teaching Associates typically are responsible for providing
classroom and/or applied instruction for general education
For Music 9: Introduction to Music. A general education 3-unit
course for non-music majors. The course includes teaching music
theory and aesthetics for the general student. Notation of pitch
and rhythm will also be taught as well as reading, playing, and
writing melodies with choral accompaniment. Three contact hours of
classroom instruction plus preparation per week (3 WTU).
For Music 31-39 (lower division applied instruction): Applied
lessons, generally private or small group lessons, that include
technical, stylistic, and aesthetic performance studies of standard
literature: etudes, solo, chamber, and large ensemble music. A
1-unit course is equivalent to .25 WTU and consists of a half-hour
of classroom contact hours.
For Music 117JC – Jazz Combo. Applied instruction for Jazz Combo.
Includes technical, stylistic, improvisational, and aesthetic
performance studies associated with the jazz literature. A 1-unit
course is equivalent to 1.33 WTU with ensemble meeting once per
For Music 74 - Listener's Guide to Music. A three-unit course on a
wide range of musical styles (past, present, classical, and
popular) for music and non-music majors. Guided practical
experiences and the development of an aesthetic sensitivity for
music of various cultures. G.E. Breadth C1
Anticipated Appointment Dates
Fall 2021: August 17, 2021 - December 22, 2021
Spring 2022: January 18, 2022 - May 21, 2022
Hours/Units per week
: Students can work up to 20-hours per
- 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hrs per week (40hrs x
- 1.3-wtus - 5.2-wtus (dependent on courses and number of
- 3-6 units
- no more than 6-units
may include the following, but will be dependent
upon the specific course to which the teaching associate will be
assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty member
in charge of the course:
- Teach beginning course (as instructor of record)
- Prepare course assignments and attend section meetings as
directed by Course Coordinator
- Maintain office hours
- Will be responsible for grading student work
- Attend TA orientation at the beginning of the semester
- Must be current or newly admitted Music MA student in good
standing at California State University, Fresno.
- Must enroll in at least 6 units (three of which must be
graduate units) for the semester or in two courses applicable to
program of study.
- The successful candidate must have a at least a 3.0 GPA.
Applicants with a 3.5 or higher are preferred.
- Applicants may be asked to demonstrate piano skills.
- International students must have a TOEFL score of 600 or
better. Candidates must have the ability to design and grade exams
- For those who have previously held a TA position at Fresno
State, peer and student evaluations will be reviewed and considered
as part of the selection process.

3. Curriculum Vita
, or résumé. Your Curriculum Vita, or CV,
is the academic equivalent of a résumé. It should contain your
contact information, your employment and educational history,
skills such as computer programming, familiarity with commonly used
computer programs, as well as internships, awards, volunteer
service, training and any other experience you have that is
relevant to education.
4. Cover Letter
on teaching, your preparedness for teaching,
and your personal and professional goals. This need be only a 1-2
page document in which you describe what skills and knowledge base
you possess that you believe would make you a good university-level
instructor, why you would like to teach at the university level,
what your future goals are, and what you hope to gain from the
experience of being a TA here at Fresno State.
5. As part of the selection process, applicants may be asked for an

check with your department for your Base Salary. The monthly salary
is calculated based on the Weighted Teaching Units assigned.

or Program Coordinator after consultation with the individual
- Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining
Agreement for Unit 11 , a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the
CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student
Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the
department teaching associate position.
