Teaching Associate for the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures

Determinant on successful TA Eligibility and Department Eligibility, The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures is seeking TA applicants to teach one section of Spanish 1A or Spanish 1B.

Anticipated Semesters and Appointment Dates :

Fall 2021: August 17, 2021 - December 22, 2021 (closed)

Spring 2022: January 18, 2022 - May 21, 2022

Hours/Units per week : Students can work up to 20-hours per week;
  • 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hrs per week (40hrs x 1-unit/15-unit)
  • 1.3-wtus - 5.2-wtus (dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)
  • 3-6 units
  • No more than 6-units
Typical assignment is 4-units, equivalent to 11 hours per week.

Job Duties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the specific course to which the teaching associate will be assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty member in charge of the course:
  • Teach beginning Spanish course (as instructor of record)
  • Prepare course assignments and attend section meetings as directed by Course Coordinator
  • Maintain office hours
  • Will be responsible for grading student work
  • Attend TA orientation at the beginning of the semester
Qualifications:
  • Must be a student admitted to the Spanish Master's program at Fresno State;
  • Must have passed the MA Language Exam;
  • Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish and English at advanced levels;
  • Must have successfully completed SPAN 201 (Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language) with a grade of “B” or higher;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in groups;
  • Ability and willingness to work with computers including common word-processing software, and computer and Internet-based language teaching technology.

    • If you are not yet a Fresno State student : Most U.S. universities allow students to access their academic records online, in a way similar to the way described above for Fresno State students. Contact your institution’s registrar to find out how to access your unofficial transcript and follow the process described above. If you have transcripts from more than one institution, please copy them all and paste them into one document, as PageUp only allows one document to be uploaded into the link for transcripts. 3. Curriculum Vitae, or résumé. Your Curriculum Vitae, or CV, is the academic equivalent of a résumé. It should contain your contact information, your employment and educational history, skills such as computer programming, familiarity with commonly used computer programs, as well as internships, awards, volunteer service, training and any other experience you have that is relevant to education.

4. P ersonal Statement on teaching, your preparedness for teaching, and your personal and professional goals. This need be only a 1-2 page document in which you describe what skills and knowledge base you possess that you believe would make you a good university-level Spanish instructor, why you would like to teach Spanish at the university level, what your future goals are, and what you hope to gain from the experience of being a Spanish TA here at Fresno State.
  • If you are a native speaker of English, you must write this document in Spanish, and if you are a native speaker of Spanish, you must write it in English.
  • If you are not a native speaker of either Spanish or English, please compose it in Spanish.
5. Voice Recording : A 1-2 minute voice recording in English and in Spanish summarizing your academic and professional goals. This cannot be uploaded to PageUp, therefore, it must be e-mailed directly to Professor Elsa Castillo elsac@csufresno.edu.

  • Evaluations: For details, please view the Academic Policy Manual, Section 311
  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The monthly salary is calculated based on the Weighted Teaching Units assigned.
  • Salary Schedule: The salary schedule can be found on the Faculty Affairs website here .
  • Assignments: Assignments are usually made by the Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the individual faculty member.
  • Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11 , a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department teaching associate position.
