Piano - Assistant Professor

Our Position

Fresno State is seeking an extraordinary pianist who is committed to providing an education that will transform the lives of our highly diverse and talented students. The successful candidate will be responsible for sustaining and expanding our keyboard program. The primary teaching responsibilities include: (1) Overseeing the keyboard area, including accreditation with NASM and student advising; (2) Teaching undergraduate and graduate applied piano lessons; supervising student preparation for performances, recitals and research projects; (3) Teaching courses in undergraduate and graduate keyboard literature and other area-specific offerings as needed (e.g., class piano, piano pedagogy, collaborative piano); (4) Giving solo performances, performing with faculty colleagues and guest musicians; (5) Engaging in scholarly and/or applied research in the field of keyboard performance/pedagogy.

Other responsibilities: as a collaborative departmental citizen actively participating in departmental, college, and university service, including committee work and academic support; recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students into the piano programs. Faculty also establish and maintain positive relationships with area public and private piano educators; and are actively involved in regional, state, and national professional piano organizations.

The typical workload is 15 weighted teaching units (WTUs) per semester, generally comprising 12 WTUs of instruction and 3 WTUs of non-instructional responsibilities. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. Teaching responsibilities will be assigned based on the candidate’s expertise and the department’s needs. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Our Department

The Department of Music was one of the original departments when the university was founded in 1911 and continues to be a leader in music education and artistic performance in the Central Valley and the state at large. Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, our department is a comprehensive unit in the College of the Arts and Humanities and offers undergraduate and master's degrees in classical and jazz performance; as well as music education, conducting, and composition.

Our department serves approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students, with 22 full-time and 18 part-time faculty. We schedule over 150 performances a year that include landmark symphonic and choral works, operas, festivals, and master classes. We offer over $300,000 annually in student scholarships and enjoy access to one of the largest music library collections in the country.

Qualifications

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.): An earned doctorate in piano (DMA, Ph.D., or equivalent). The master's and/or doctorate must be in Piano Performance.

Required Experience:

  1. Evidence of working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  2. Active as an accomplished professional pianist with demonstrable career and expertise as a soloist and collaborative pianist that may include international, national, regional, and community engagement and/or collaboration.
  3. Documented experience teaching piano at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  4. Evidence of successful student recruitment.
  5. A well-articulated agenda for research, scholarship, and creative activity.


Preferred Experience:

  1. Evidence of broad knowledge of the keyboard repertoire that displays versatility and familiarity with multiple genres, including global and contemporary trends.
  2. A record of active participation in local, regional, state, national, and/or international music organizations.
  3. At least two years of experience teaching piano at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
