The School of Communication at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment in the Journalism Division beginning August 29, 2022. The School of Communication seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion of those historically underrepresented individuals in higher education. Candidates should have five years or more of professional journalism experience. College teaching experience is preferred. A master’s degree is required. Instructors must have experience in contemporary journalism practices in data journalism, including proficiency in newsroom tools such as R and/or Python, and be able to teach basic reporting skills courses as well as media studies courses. Candidates should have a portfolio of work to show data journalism skills. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.
Candidates will be evaluated on these competencies:
- Collaborative work: Examples of working in newsrooms or academia that showcase partnerships or working across disciplines.
- Leadership: High-level professional positions that show public outreach.
- Hands-on skills sets: in data journalism, such as proficiency in Python, R, Excel; additional skills in visual programming language is a plus.
- Diverse coverage areas : Examples of work that embrace reporting on undercovered communities; the value of diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Teaching experience: Teaching experience at the college level, including adjunct, guest lectures and other related work such as heading up workshops or training are all.
- Comfort level in a student-focused environment: Faculty mentor and support students in their path into the industry.
- Additional opportunities: Desire to work with the Investigative Reporting Workshop, our nonprofit, independent newsroom, on data-related projects.
