Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) is seeking applications for a Police Sergeant ! We are seeking a leader for our Patrol Operations Division who will supervise a police team, community engagement efforts, and special assignments during special event operations requiring focused coordination of, and collaboration with, police officers, noncommissioned professional employees, and our community. This position coordinates with a high-energy community comprised of diverse students, faculty, and staff from around the world. Our successful candidate will excel at communicating and working with a wide variety of persons attending a flagship public research university. The Patrol Sergeant works in a variety of environments including CU’s Folsom Stadium during our six CU Buffs Football Games, large stadium concerts and dignitary visits. The successful candidate will also be joining our CUPD Buffs family and become part of an extraordinary leadership team. We are offering $5,000 in bonuses ($2,500 signing bonus and $2,500 after successful completion of the training program) to the selected candidate.

Who We Are

The members of the University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) are dedicated to providing the highest quality police services in order to enhance community safety, protect life and property, and reduce crime and the fear of crime. To do this, we pledge to develop a partnership with the community, to lead a community commitment to resolve problems, and to improve the safety and quality of life for all CU affiliates. The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU-Boulder police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a prompt and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Team Building and Management

  • Coordinates work activities, reviewing patrol responses and related crime, incident, and traffic reports/issues to gauge the effectiveness of police operations. Promotes positive relationships among all department personnel including coaching, mentoring, and motivating staff.
  • Calls for service through large picture scene or call load assessment, containment, personnel assignment. Delegates responsibilities and notifies command and other bureaus or agencies, displaying effective management, communication, and leadership skills.


Community Engagement and Support

  • Provides specialized assistance and crisis intervention to those in need by making referrals to other legal, social and medical agencies, and by working with victim advocates.
  • Collects and preserves evidence by photographing, videotaping, and sketching crime scenes, collecting items of evidentiary value, and maintaining chain of custody requirements.
  • Supports public events by maintaining crowd and traffic control and specialized enforcement at political rallies, demonstrations, concerts, and sporting events.
  • Assists the public with medical emergencies, fires, hazardous materials accidents, natural disasters, stranded motorists, and missing persons. Provides directions and information to the public.


What You Should Know

  • This position requires a full background check (criminal, financial, motor vehicle), which also includes a psychological examination, job suitability assessment, a polygraph, pre-employment physical and a drug screening.
  • Per department policy, applicants who have used marijuana within two years of application will be disqualified.


What We Can Offer

  • The salary range for this position is $113,122 - $120,343 annually.
  • The selected candidate will receive a $2,500 signing bonus and $2,500 after successful completion of the training program.
  • A $2,500 referral bonus is available to current CUPD staff within divisional guidelines.

What We Require
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of specialized education or training. Law enforcement experience appropriate to the assignment may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of current Colorado P.O.S.T. certification or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of supervisory law enforcement experience equivalent to the Colorado POST certified Police Sergeant level or higher at a municipal, state, or county commissioned equivalently sized agency.
  • Policing experience such as federal, railroad, private police, military, and correctional facilities law enforcement will not be considered.
  • Must be currently employed as a police sergeant (or employed as a police sergeant within the last 6 months).
  • Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver License and no:
    • Felony convictions.
    • Domestic violence convictions.
    • Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver’s license.
    • Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years.


What You Will Need
  • Education or training that meets the requirements for a bachelor’s degree, equivalent specialized experience or a combination of both. Specific areas of advanced or specialized training include:
    • Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act.
    • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
    • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
    • State of Colorado and municipal laws applicable to criminal offenses, traffic and liquor offenses.
    • Understanding and application of U.S. constitutional law with particular emphasis on the 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th Amendments.
    • Federal classifications of controlled substances.
    • Identification of drug and alcohol intoxication and impairment.
    • Hazardous material identification and response.
    • Knowledge and application of the National Incident Management System and the Incident Command System.
    • Courtroom testimony and evidence handling.
    • Victim’s rights, laws applicable to juveniles and at-risk adults.
