The University of Colorado Police Department (CUPD) encourages applications for a Property and Evidence Specialist to manage the daily property management operations and activities. Who We Are

The members of the University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) are dedicated to providing the highest quality police services in order to enhance community safety, protect life and property, and reduce crime and the fear of crime. To do this, we pledge to develop a partnership with the community, to lead a community commitment to resolve problems, and to improve the safety and quality of life for all CU affiliates. The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU Boulder police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a timely and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Daily Property and Evidence Tasks

  • Complete intake of all property to the evidence room. Check incoming property and evidence against accepted procedures for accuracy and integrity to preserve the chain of custody of evidence, and testify in court as needed.
  • Make a determination on the final disposition of property, including auctions, donations, destruction, or returning the property to the owner and receives the proper approvals for disposition through the chain of command. Follow retention policies and procedures.
  • Conduct appropriate research to determine accurate dispositions for property, releases/disposes of property according to municipal, state, and federal laws or court orders.


Professional Development

  • Participate in International Association of Property and Evidence (IAPE) training to support certification in the use of NCIC/CCIC as well as ongoing training.
  • Attend scene investigation training.


Compliance

  • Participate in all audits, inventories, and inspections to maintain accreditation compliance. Submit property to the state lab in accordance with Colorado law and attend meetings with other state agencies and the District Attorney’s office to keep CUPD current on all evidence-related developments and changes.
  • Coordinate police auctions for unclaimed property and bicycles and determine what will be sold at such auctions.


Scene Work

  • Provide scene and other investigative support, such as evidence collection, photographing scenes, and basic latent processing.


What You Should Know
  • This position is subject to a background investigation, including criminal, financial, motor vehicle records background check; personal history questionnaire; polygraph; an Excluded Parties List System check; reference check; psychological evaluation; and a drug screen. Per department policy, applicants who have used marijuana within two years of application will be disqualified.
  • This position will be part of an on-call rotation after the initial training period.


What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $56,000.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and relevant experience as a property and evidence technician in a law enforcement agency.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have none of the following:
    • Felony convictions
    • Domestic violence convictions
    • Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver’s license.
    • Alcohol/drug-related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years.


What You Will Need

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a proactive approach to resolving issues, and the ability to learn.
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail orientation.
  • High level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to acquire IAPE, or related property and evidence certification, within a year. We will work with the selected candidate to support their training for, and completion of, this certification.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Forensics, or a related field.
