POSITION: Assistant Professor of History (Tenure track)

DEPARTMENT: Social and Behavioral Sciences

DIVISION: Academic Affairs

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Department Chair

PLACEMENT: Placement on salary schedule is dependent on qualifications.

MINIMUM PAY RATE: Qualifications include education and related work experience.

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Joliet Junior College seeks to make a tenure-track appointment in World History (with preferred specialties in African, Middle Eastern and/or Asian History). Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching on the undergraduate level, be able to demonstrate respect for students; understand learning styles and apply understanding to institution-related activities; demonstrate integrity and promote diversity and open communications. Fifteen credit hours a semester constitute a normal load. Position is subject to all terms and provisions of the Joliet Junior College faculty contract. The start date for this position is August 2022.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Teach both halves of the introductory World History survey and advanced classes in areas of specialization.

2. Work closely with other instructors and special programs and services within the college to determine placements, curriculum, and academic support.

3. Participate in course development, assessment and planning activities online and/or blended courses.

4.Participate in appropriate departmental meetings and recruitment activities; serve on committees. 5. Assist students with academic advising.

6. Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning.

7. Demonstrate strong understanding and commitment to the community college mission.

8. Teach at other campus sites as needed.

9. Meet other contractual obligations as spelled out in the Joliet Junior College faculty contract.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Master’s Degree in history is required, Ph.D. preferred.

2. Minimum of two years teaching experience at the collegiate level is required; experience at the community college level is preferred.

3. Ability to offer survey courses in one or more of the following fields: history of Africa, history of the Middle East, and Asian history is highly desired.

4. Expertise in appropriate technologies for instruction is required.

5. Experience in course development and assessment, planning, quality and accreditation processes, and committee service is desired.

6. Experience with traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds is desired.
