The Assistant Director – Professional Development provides leadership to career readiness training, professional development, and community building offered to students and alumni in partnership with staff, faculty and external partners to develop career programs and initiatives that positively impact students' marketability to employers and prepare students for successful transitions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serves as the campus-level point person for career readiness training, professional development, and community building offered to students and alumni; helps develop and support comprehensive campus-wide training, professional development, and recognition program for career services; creates new professional development programming to address current gaps informed by qualitative and/or quantitative assessment data; directs and coordinates broad communication efforts to students, campus constituents, and community members about the value of career development including, but not limited to, social media, website, print resources, direct e-mails, and invited presentations; collaborates with student-facing units to promote the value and purpose of career development as a component of the student experience; provides work direction to an intern or student employee to accomplish this job function.

The Assistant Director participates in the identification and cultivation of strategic and operational partnerships on campus and within the immediate community to complement academic and/or experiential skill acquisition and competency development; determines unique needs for groups; recommends programs and activities with consideration of Unit and network capacity; ensures an equity lens informs all partnerships and professional development activities; engages students, faculty, staff, alumni, and employers in programming ranging from exploration of career paths, addressing potential barriers to success, decision-making, connecting to internship, graduate school, and career opportunities, and preparing for the transition from college to next steps; maintains awareness of national and regional trends in higher education, career services, professional development, and the resulting impact on UTC's population of students, academic programs, and alumni; and participates in various local, state, regional, and national organizations to align programming, leverage benchmarks, and increase the visibility of UTC.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of professional development models, especially competency-based models associated with career readiness and transition
  • Ability to advocate for career development in a variety of settings and for a diversity of audiences
  • Ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders resulting in deeper professional relationships
  • Knowledge of contemporary communication skills to include, but not limited to, digital, social media print resources, and verbal presentations

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; and two years of professional experience delivering content, training material, or educational concepts within either a college/university or human resources/organizational development setting.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree; two years of professional experience developing and delivering content, training material, or educational concepts within a career services environment or internal organizational development capacity; professional experience in human resources, talent acquisition, or training outside of Higher education setting is valuable; ability to gather data/input to conduct needs assessments; skilled in program and/or content development and delivery; knowledge of diverse means of conducting outcome assessment; ability to collect, interpret, analyze, and report on qualitative and quantitative data; and broad knowledge of career development interventions and models.
