LDA Substance Use Disorder Treatment Specialist (Medical Professional 1 – MR10 )

The LDA Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment Specialist’s primary role is to provide substance use counseling services including but not limited to assessment, treatment planning, short-term counseling, group therapy, psychoeducation, and case management. The position will provide mental health and substance use counseling for students with co-occurring needs. The SUD Treatment Specialist will serve at the UT System level on the Advisory Board on Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Education, Prevention, Treatment and Recovery, as well as other appropriate department and university committees, and participate in appropriate university activities. The position will take an active role in the overall operation and function of the Counseling Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Provide substance use counseling services including but not limited to assessment, treatment planning, short-term counseling, group therapy and workshops, psychoeducation, and case management; and document clinical encounters in electronic health record.

Consultation, Outreach, and Training

Provide clinical supervision and training of practicum/intern graduate students, as well as ongoing training and education for Counseling Center and University staff to enhance SUD Treatment competency; provide UTC community with psychoeducational workshops and programming related to SUD treatment, prevention, and recovery; collaborate with UTC Recovery Program staff to support students in recovery; and consult with UTC community regarding SUD treatment, prevention, and recovery issues.

Center, Campus, and Community Involvement

Participate in Counseling Center staff meetings, committees, and activities; and participate in Counseling Center, University, and UT System committees, professional organizations, and meetings as assigned by Counseling Center Director.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery
  • Knowledge of relevant legal and ethical standards in the treatment of SUDs
  • Skills at providing individual and group therapy for SUDs
  • Ability to speak in public
  • Skills at providing psychoeducational workshops, programming, and consultation to community members
  • Ability to develop referral resources for SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery
A Limited Duration Appointment (LDA) is a form of regular employment for a specific project or for a limited period. An LDA may be established for up to one year with an option to renew the appointment annually for a maximum of three years.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related mental health field with CADC or LADC in the State of TN; two years of professional experience treating substance use disorders; experience working with individuals from diverse populations including underrepresented, marginalized and underserved populations; and ability to work effectively with young adults.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related mental health field; CADC or LADC in the State of TN; more than two years of professional experience treating substance use disorders; qualified Clinical Supervisor; experience providing SUD treatment on a college or university campus; knowledge of campus culture; knowledge of developmental theory; and ability to work on a multi-disciplinary team.
