Job Description Summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering at Auburn University invites applicants for the Director of the Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory ( ASEL ). ASEL is a newly constructed, 41,500-square-foot, $22 million laboratory that includes a high-bay laboratory with specially engineered floors and walls capable of handling extreme loads; a 4,700-cubic-foot geotechnical test chamber located within the strong floor; a concrete materials research and testing laboratory; an extreme wind loads testing facility, and includes approximately 2,500 square feet of office and collaboration spaces for faculty and graduate students. ASEL operates within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and its researchers are also charged to work with other affiliated research and education centers across the University.
The ASEL Director is expected to provide leadership to ASEL while maintaining an externally funded research program featuring large-scale structural engineering experimental work. The ASEL Director will also provide undergraduate- or graduate-level instruction and engage in university and professional service commensurate with research and ASEL Director responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenured or tenure-track faculty member in the area of structural engineering at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, or a non-tenured Professor of Practice commensurate with background, qualifications, and experience.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate should possess many of the following qualifications:
A doctoral degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program at the time employment begins with an emphasis in structural engineering.
A minimum of 12 years of experience in structural engineering research with a demonstrated record of accomplishment, significant achievement, and leadership.
Status as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Structural Engineer (S.E.) is desired.
A demonstrated ability to secure funding from various sources such as federal agencies, state agencies, industry, and other organizations.
Ability to successfully form and lead multidisciplinary teams.
A demonstrated ability in providing undergraduate- or graduate-level instruction is desired.
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and ability to work across multiple constituencies.
Ability to maintain an inclusive culture that values research, education, outreach, and diversity.
The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin, and must continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Faculty status is negotiable within the allowable position title requirements.
