FoodPIC Director


Position Summary

The Department of Food Science and Technology seeks applicants with expertise in product development and food processing for the position of FoodPIC director. The FoodPIC director will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the FoodPIC and report to the Department Head of Food Science and Technology within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The director will have responsibility and authority for all center activities, budget, facilities, and personnel. Specific responsibilities will include:
· Collaborate with federal and state agencies as well as food processing and allied industries to generate interest in the center.
· Provide innovative leadership in engagement of food entrepreneurs and networks within the state, national, and global food industry and researchers with the purpose of generating activities aligned with the center’s overall goal of stimulating food manufacturing economy within the State of GA. This includes close collaboration with UGA Extension programs.
· Develop strategic partnerships with the food industry and equipment manufacturers to integrate their equipment with FoodPIC’s technologies and expertise.
· Work with industry partners, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders to effectively utilize the center’s facilities and equipment in creating new food products and processes.
· Supervise FoodPIC personnel and manage income and budgets.
· Provide research, development, manufacturing services including training and outreach to the food industry clientele specific to their products and processes.
· This position is expected to develop a business plan linked to fee-for-service aimed to generate sufficient revenue through contracts, workshops, and other activities including grants to support personnel and future growth of the center.
· The position is expected to work closely with the extension, research, and teaching faculty within the UGA FST and collaborate with other units within the UGA to make the FoodPIC center a premier center of excellence.
· Coordinate and manage the day-to-day operation and activities of FoodPIC.
· Participate directly in food industry research with assistance of staff and students.
· Other duties of this position will involve working with FoodPIC advisory board; serving as a clearing house of opportunities available in food processing technologies and food product development; and collaboratively working with other centers in the state and finding suitable partners.

About the College/Unit/Department

The University of Georgia ( UGA ) Food Product Innovation and Commercialization (FoodPIC) Center’s mission is to assist food companies and entrepreneurs in product and process development; to promote competitiveness; and to create economic impact in Georgia, the Southeast, and beyond. The Georgia food industry is growing and vibrant; it is comprised of approximately 1000 small, medium and large companies employing roughly 60,000 people. The Center is located on the University’s Griffin Campus 40 miles south of Atlanta city center and 35 miles from Atlanta International Airport. The Food Science and Technology faculty on Griffin campus created the charter for this center several years ago on paper using the College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences ( CAES ) resources. Funding for the director’s position (state appropriated funds) and one staff position for this center come from CAES . The Center also has a dedicated ~17,000 sq. ft. building ($7.5 million facility) with offices, labs and three climate-controlled pilot processing rooms.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate in food science, chemical/bioprocess engineering, chemistry, microbiology, or related field.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Tenure-Track (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor) or a Non-tenure Track Public Service and Outreach (Public Service Assistant, Public Service Associate, or Senior Public Service Associate) faculty member. Tenure upon appointment will be considered at the Associate and Full Professor level.

To be considered for the Tenure-Track Ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor), candidates must meet the requirements listed in the UGA Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure of Academic Rank Faculty (beginning on pg 21).

To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

· Minimum of 10 years of professional experience preferred with a proven background in food and agricultural industry and/or research and extension in academia.
