The NMHU Department of Chemistry ( https://www.nmhu.edu/landing-chemistry/ ) is approved by the American Chemical Society. We typically have 40-50 students in BS/BA Chemistry programs and 5-10 students in a thesis-based MS Applied Chemistry program. Major instrumentation includes 300 MHz NMR spectrometer, single-crystal X-ray diffraction setup with a cryosystem, LC-MS, GC-MS, GC- FID, IR and Raman spectrometers, TGA / DTA instrument, spectrofluorometers, solvent purification system, etc. Also available at NMHU is an HPC cluster.

New Mexico is an NSF EPSCoR and NIH INBRE state, thus the opportunities for modest extramural grant funding are excellent. Chemistry faculty have also been successful in securing major NSF funding (incl. Major Research Instrumentation and PREM grants). Intramural seed funding is available through NMHU Faculty Research Committee.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate level along with leading a research program involving undergraduate and Master level students. Faculty will be expected to serve as student mentor and advisor in keeping with the university’s mission. Duties and Responsibilities
• Prepare and teach, as assigned, selected courses within the chemistry program to undergraduate and graduate students (normal teaching load of 24 credit hours per academic year);
• Conduct scholarly activities including research in the stated field of knowledge and publish findings in professional journals;
• Establish an independent, innovative, research program while seeking external funding;
• Hold office hours as required;
• Advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students on matters within the chemistry discipline and related areas;
• Serve on committees and participate in meetings as part of university service;
• Supervise and manage students and/or technicians in laboratory preparation assignments and instrumentation maintenance;
• Maintain regular attendance on campus;
• Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in Chemistry ( ABD will be considered) with Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, physics, or related field; publications in organic synthesis (first position) or physical/computational chemistry (second position); excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in mentoring undergraduate students in research projects. Preferred Qualifications
Education: Postdoctoral training;
Experience/Skills: Ability to productively use and manage an NMR spectrometer and GC-MS (for synthetic organic chemistry position); experience in MD or DFT simulations (for physical/computational chemistry position); experience in delivering college-level chemistry coursework and in active learning approaches; experience in writing grant/fellowship applications. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Expert knowledge in the relevant field of chemistry (synthetic organic chemistry or physical/computational chemistry);
• Effective teaching skills (including the ability to use LMS and other software/web tools);
• Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body;
