The Humanities, Social Science, and Communication (HSC) Department at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time position of Assistant Professor of Philosophy. The position will begin fall of 2022. MSOE utilizes long-term contracts for full-time faculty and provides opportunity for rank advancement. MSOE expects, supports, and rewards a strong commitment to excellence in teaching.  

The candidate will be responsible for teaching a variety of ethics courses as well as several undergraduate elective courses as part of MSOE’s general education program (these might include, for example, epistemology, social and political philosophy, philosophy of mind and AI, among others).  Currently, MSOE uses a quarter system, and the selected candidate will be responsible for teaching 4 courses in each of the fall, winter, and spring quarters.  In the fall of 2023, MSOE will transition to a semester system and the selected candidate will teach 3 – 4 courses each semester.  The selected candidate will also be expected to engage in scholarship and contribute service to the institution and their profession. 

Minimum requirements

  • AOS: Open
  • AOC: Ethics and Applied Ethics
  • The candidate should have a strong record of undergraduate teaching experience.
  • The candidate should have strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build successful relationships with students and faculty from other departments.

Preferred competencies

  • Teaching and research interests that complement those of other members of the department and university
  • Experience or interest in advising undergraduate research

About the department

The HSC department holds a unique position in an applications-oriented institution which allows faculty the opportunity to design and teach a variety of courses across disciplines. The department is a collegial environment with two other philosophers as well as faculty in psychology, history, literature, Spanish, user experience, and communication.  Our offices are housed in the Grohmann Museum, which displays a collection of industrial art created from 1580 to the present.
