DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Geography Department (https://www.csus.edu/geog/) offers a B.A. in Geography that features balanced preparation in physical and human geography, geographic skills and techniques, and regional study. Four concentrations within the major allow for specializations in human geography, physical geography, GIS, and planning (http://catalog.csus.edu/colleges/natural-sciences-mathematics/geography/). The department has strong ties to campus programs in environmental studies, ethnic studies, Asian American studies, Chicanx-Latinx studies, Native American studies, Pan African studies, LGBTQ studies, and women's studies. Two department computer labs support training in GIS, GPS, cartography, and remote sensing, and allow students to pursue independent research projects. The department also houses the campus Paleoecology Lab.

POSITION DETAILS:

We seek a natural resources geographer for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor rank. The successful candidate should also have experience utilizing modern remote sensing methods and will be able to teach courses in remote sensing. Preference will be given to candidates who have expertise in water resources or wildfire.

The successful candidate will contribute to Sacramento State's Anchor University initiative by bridging active scientific inquiry with decisions made at the State Capitol. The successful candidate will also help support the University's commitment to diversity and inclusion by strengthening Geography's ability to analyze the spatial equity of natural resources. This position will help expand the community-supporting role of Geography's GIS Center.

JOB DUTIES:

This position is teaching intensive; the successful candidate will teach courses in the Geography major as well as in the University's General Education program. We seek applicants committed to teaching a diverse group of undergraduate students. Duties will include:
  • Developing and teaching upper division courses in the candidate's areas of specialization.
  • Teaching other undergraduate courses, including introductory courses.
  • Advising students.
  • Engaging in scholarly and/or creative activities.
  • Establishing working relationships within the university and in the community, such as with local and regional public agencies.
  • Providing professional service within the department, college, and/or university.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The Geography Department reminds applicants that it is only necessary to meet all the required qualifications in order to apply. We encourage both academic applicants and those transitioning from non-academic careers.
  • A Ph.D. in Geography is required, or a Ph.D. in a closely-related field with graduate coursework in Geography. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctorate by August 2022.
  • Graduate coursework and/or research/work experience in the geography of natural resources.
  • Demonstrated potential to teach thematic courses in our Geography major.
  • Demonstrated potential to teach remote sensing courses.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop an ongoing program of research and/or creative activity.
  • Demonstrated potential to work well with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving undergraduate students, including teaching, academic advising, pedagogical innovation, and supervision of undergraduate research.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Specialization in water resources or wildfire.
  • Demonstrated potential to cultivate relationships with local or regional governments as well as local non-governmental neighborhood and community groups
  • Demonstrated potential to collaborate with faculty and students on natural resources and/or remote sensing projects.
  • Prior teaching experience at the college or university level.
