Summary
The Department of Surgery is offering a motivated and competent Registered Nurse the opportunity to serve heart transplant patients in a team-based setting with primary responsibilities for providing donor screening services at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. This position will use their medical decision-making to screen organ offers for heart transplant patients on the VA Heart Transplant Program waiting list. Main responsibilities include screening donor offers, reviewing organ offers with Surgical and Medical Directors, and coordinating organ procurement with Procurement Surgeons and donor hospital. Expected shifts are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.
Job Duties
- Evaluates organ offers using transplant center-specific evaluation criteria in a timely and efficient manner.
- Presents appropriate organ offers to the transplant surgeon.
- Coordinates transportation for the recovery team and/or organ to and from the donor hospital.
- Coordinates transportation for the recovery team and/or organ to and from the recipient hospital.
- Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations.
- Performs, orders, and interprets diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
- Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
- Maintains records and writes orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
- Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
- Provides follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
- Collaborates with providers and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
- Two years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). Degrees in lieu of experience will not be accepted.
- Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as a transplant coordinator or donor screener is preferred.
