Assistant Staff Scientist



The Department of Pain and Translational Symptom Science (PTSS) at the University of Maryland School of Nursing invites applications for an Assistant Staff Scientist to join our department. We seek an outstanding scientist with high energy and enthusiasm for supporting our department’s NIH-funded program of research in the area of acute/chronic pain and symptom science. The PTSS department is home to a vibrant and collaborative group of scientists who apply cutting edge methods in basic, translational and clinical programs of research. The departmental infrastructure includes world-class wet bench space, electrophysiological and procedure rooms, rodent behavioral testing suites and clinical research space. The department is also home to a National Institute for Nursing Research (NINR) P30-funded Omics Associated with Self-management Interventions for Symptoms (OASIS) Center. In addition to this school-based Center, faculty in the PTSS department are invited to join the interdisciplinary campus-wide Center to Advance Chronic Pain Research (CACPR), co-led by Drs. Susan G. Dorsey and Man-Kyo Chung . The CACPR hosts bi-weekly pain interest group seminars and an annual symposium on a variety of pain topics. The UMSON is part of the University of Maryland graduate professional campus that also includes the schools of medicine, dentistry, social work, pharmacy and law, and is one of the fastest growing biomedical research centers in the nation. The unique composition of the campus enables health professionals to address clinical care, public policy and social issues through inter-professional research, scholarship, teaching and community action. Its location in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C.-Annapolis triangle maximizes opportunities for collaboration with government agencies, health care institutions and life sciences industries.

Qualifications :

Qualifications

Doctoral degree (PhD) in Applied Psychology required with a minimum of three years of postdoctoral training. Evidence of scholarly achievement in terms of original data-based publications and national/international research presentations. Evidence of successful mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.

Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Minimum of three years of direct, hands-on experience with basic science / psychological approaches to pain mechanisms and management.
  • At least three years of direct experience using pain modulation research including placebo-induced hypoalgesia, virtual reality, among others.
  • A minimum of one year of direct, hands-on experience conducting brain imaging research with both healthy participants and patients with chronic pain conditions in clinical research settings.
  • At least one year of experience performing brain mapping data analyses (EEG, fMRI, fMRI/EEG, autonomic measurement).
  • Experience writing IRB protocols, preparing procedural manuals, and producing/compiling research reports independently.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple complex human subjects research studies, and supervise study staff.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and implementing pharmaceutical trials (e.g. vasopressin, naloxone).
  • Must have excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills as well as ability to prepare manuscript independently.
