The Earl Carl Institute for Legal and Social Policy, Inc. ( ECI ) seeks to hire an attorney with five (5) to seven (7) years of general experience in legal research and writing. The ideal candidate is highly familiar with nonprofit project management, budgeting and finance, media relations and public outreach. In addition, candidate should be familiar with scholarly legal writing, research and citation methods. Candidate should also be familiar with scholarly writing from in a variety of disciplines and forming interdisciplinary collaborations in writing. This position reports directly to the Executive Director. Essential Duties Summary
  • Pro Bono/Public Service Coordination: Coordinates pro bono/public service projects for the institute.
  • ECI Interdisciplinary Journal for Legal & Social Policy Management: Manages all journal functions via the use of the Berkley Electronic Press online Journal Management System, including submissions, call for papers and peer review process. Works with editorial board and editor in chief to ensure high quality annual and special issues.
  • Special Projects Management: Manages all ECI special signature projects. These are projects that that have a finite timeframe such as the Black Girls Initiative.
  • Resource Development and Grant Writing: Cultivates existing and future ECI donors and performs grant writing functions for new and existing programs. Conducts grant funding searches and vets them with the appropriate internal and external constituencies.
  • Ensures compliance with funding source requirements and reporting.
  • Student Development: Coordinates recruitment and orientation for ECI student workers each semester. Schedules interviews, works with senior administrative staff to ensure human resource compliance. Coordinates speakers and prepares entrance and exit assessments.
  • Staff and Student Development: Coordinates staff and student professional development through scheduling training primarily in the areas of research and writing.
  • Budget and Finance: Performs financial management of relevant project accounts.
  • Media Relations: Works with University and TMSL Offices of Advancement to disseminate media advisories and press releases and to gain approval for radio and television appearances.
  • Assist the Director in supervising and directing the work activities of students, including student research and writing projects.

Juris Doctorate from an ABA approved law school. Required Licensing/Certification
Licensed to practice law in Texas. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Federal, State, Local, and County laws
  • Policies, procedures, and practices
  • Specialized practices, equipment and procedures
  • Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis, ProDoc or similar.
  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications
Skill in:
  • Leadership, project management, time and organizational skills
  • Evaluation and interpretation of the data that policy analysts collect in their research
  • Critical thinking, Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Strong analytical
  • Coordinating work of others
  • Strong writing skills are a given, considering the need for them to create papers and articles on their research results that clearly and concisely convey their findings
  • Excellent both verbal and written communication
Ability to:
  • Work with students in a learning environment
  • Work effectively and efficiently under pressure is essential
  • Use job related software such as, but not limited to, Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw and legal databases
  • Prepare detailed reports

Work Experience
Experience in brainstorming and creating project for grant proposals preferred. Working/Environmental Conditions
  • Prolonged standing and/or walking.
  • Handling light weight objects.
