About the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design

The Drexel University Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design is dedicated to the education of students in the areas of design, media and the performing and visual arts. The Westphal College offers 17 undergraduate and eight graduate majors, housed in award-winning, technologically enhanced facilities, and taught by distinguished faculty who have worked at the top of their fields. The College values a studio approach that incorporates six months of required co-op work experience for all undergraduate students. Westphal is home to a virtual reality and immersive research lab, two theaters, an art gallery, a notable collection of over 17,000 historic costumes, a record label, a television station, and numerous cutting-edge making spaces. About the Program

Drexel's top-flight Fashion Design major is a studio-based, boutique-style undergraduate program that trains the next generation of creative thinkers for the fashion industry. The program is ranked in the top four in the United States and 14th in the world . Students in Drexel’s Fashion Design program have the opportunity to study alongside dynamic educators with extensive industry experience, produce innovative designs in our well-equipped studios, and participate in Drexel’s world-renowned co-op and study abroad programs. The culmination of the program is the Drexel Fashion Show , at which students showcase original garments and accessories for industry leaders.

The Fashion Design program in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design at Drexel University seeks qualified adjunct faculty beginning Fall term, September 2021. Creativity, innovation and fashion leadership is a must. The qualified candidate will have active industry connections, industry experience and success in creative work. The ideal candidate will understand the role of craft in sustainable design.

Fashion Design majors are housed in the URBN Center , Westphal’s state-of-the-art facility, with well-equipped, spacious studios available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students have access to an extensive array of high-tech equipment for their design work, including 3-D printers, laser cutters, Shima Seiki knitting machines, and advanced computer simulation, as well as cutting-edge analytic platforms, enterprise resource planning/production lifecycle management software, and trend resources.

Job Summary

Adjunct faculty members will employ a variety of strategies to foster student artistic development, learning and discussions. This includes maintain proper course-related records, evaluate student work and provide students with feedback. Each adjunct faculty member is responsible for effectively teaching students in the assigned classroom or remote settings. Each adjunct faculty member is responsible for effectively implementing the mission of the Department of Design within Drexel’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. Responsibilities may include teaching days, evenings, nights, and weekends, with the potential for online only, in-person only, or a combination of both.

Essential Functions
  • Teaching classes in undergraduate and graduate fashion design
  • Teach required number of credit hours per quarter based on their contract
  • Teach studio, lecture, and/or practicum courses per their contract
  • Plan and provide instructional experiences that reflect an understanding of the philosophy, objectives, and curriculum of the program
  • Evaluate student achievement of curricular objectives/outcomes
  • Maintain communication with the program director regarding any course or student issues
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned Required Qualifications
  • One year of teaching or professional experience (suggested)
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in fashion.
  • Teaching experience at university level and/or industry experience with well-developed creative work
  • Minimum 5 years industry experience
  • Active interest in circular/responsible design a plus
  • Trend Presentation and Textile Surface Design knowledge
  • Flat pattern making, grading and garment construction
  • Fashion Illustration & Flat sketching experience
  • Apparel software programs knowledge including; Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Shima Seiki Apex 3, Shima Seiki Design software, Clo-3 or similar 3D Design Software
  • History of Costume & Textile knowledge
